How to become better at design/aesthetics?

category: general [glöplog]
@keen: yep, we had a similar conversation a few years ago (after Asm'12 or Evoke'12 IIRC), but I was too busy polishing my technical skills to understand. It is just now that it got me finally.

@rpfr: From who? People from my area don't even know demoscene exists, despite all my efforts of displaying it and giving talks about it at various IT/art events. And online collaboration would require certain preconditions to be productive and not fall apart: being online predictably, synchronized minds, self-organization or good leadership, and who knows what else. And I'm probably too old to make new friends easily.

@1in10: I am not building a skyscraper. I had found a few sticks lying on the ground and built a few sheds before, but they leak a lot. So I'm trying to figure out where to buy cheap wood and read a book or two on how to make a nice small cabin.

Once again:
Horrible and clueless --> 50..100 hrs of studying --> mediocre but enjoyable

My rule of thumb is always to please yourself first, especially when exploring new territories in style and the limits of your own skill.

When you work on something and come across a combination of things that happen to trigger some strong emotions or evoke a certain "high" of a moment, chase those things. Build up to those things. Make them your central point, and sometimes a demo organically grows around it.

Sometimes it's good to make demos for the enjoyment of the audience, but it shouldn't be the only design rule in demomaking. There's no reason everybody should always make "big audience" demos (not that there's anything wrong with it).

To sum it up: do your own thing, and if you put enough effort into it (collaboration, honing your skills by releasing and learning) it might grow into a beautiful thing.

provod, why go through all that trouble to begin with? Just get yourself a musician and a graphics guy/designer and concentrate on the code. Looking at your credits in pouet, you seem to be a proficient programmer - why wouldn't there be people willing to work with you?

from who? Everybody participating in this thread for a start?! Furthermore: IRC. Alive and kicking.

Other than that i wanna stress again that you need to be as specific as possible about your needs to tackle stuff effectively. Or you end up lost in the woods, where 50-100 hours won't get you afar since you need to cut through way too much information first.

1) Team up with friends.
2) Pick your specialism (code, music, design, draw, model, prepare food, motivate...)
3) Look around, get inspired, copy, invent from scratch eventually
4) Release
5) Listen to feedbacks
6) Repeat from 3.
7) Quit when it's enough

Fuckin read or die.
Art books, graphic design books, also watch fuckloads of demos.
5) Listen to feedbacks

Fuckin read or die

don't listen to feedback. more important than getting the consensus based reality pumped into your brain is to realize how reality is build.
later after this you can read..if you still feel its worth it..the book..

i can do the music for you:)
but only if its illegal music like edits (like this https://soundcloud.com/erotus/different-note-9)

i think its good to remind people that art that is illegal is a way of seeing the fascist nature of their current liberal reality. and both isms are just systems of control like religion or debt.

Code: shaders gonna shade (shade, shade, shade, shade, shade) faders gonna fade (fade, fade, fade, fade, fade) I'm just gonna fake (fake, fake, fake, fake, fake) fake it all fake it all

.. anyway, in my opinion, on the demoscene, "fake it till you make it" can be taken rather literally. =)
