Unpacking audio from .DAT files in PC demos

category: general [glöplog]

How can I do this? I figured that most groups would have their own ways of doing this, but then I heard of something called Dragon Unpacker, which I will try now.

But let me know what other methods there are, please.

Doesn't work with Win7, it seems. At least not 64-bit. Dunno how to get it to run.

Just had a look at some random demos, looks like it's not just .dat but all manner of other custom formats. Maybe not worth the hassle, just run + record and convert to MP3 or whatever I think.

.dat is just the extension, you can have loads of various (custom) data formats in there. Here's a hint tho: you can use 7-zip (or similar) to unpack some of them, certain demogroups just pack their data using typical methods and then change the extension to something else (doesn't even have to be .dat).

I'll have a look at that, thanks, Tomoya.

I've had a closer look at the demos: one opened with 7-Zip, but the other two didn't, but they had "basefile.dat" and the other had an ".alf" extension. I think by a simple process of investigation I'll be able to get most of the audio data out of them.. 7-Zip is probably the closest I can get to MRip which works on modern systems.

There is a version 3 beta of Mrip that works ok on Win7 64bit. No idea if it's still available anywhere.

Might help if you posted a few you are having trouble with. Also, check demodulate first.
