What should demoscene.org website be ?

category: general [glöplog]
Just do whatever the fuck you want with it, because that is what the scene is all about, isn't it?

This is your daily reminder that Facebook is not the internet.

Kylearan... Means, you are'nt on facebook or what? :)

I've joined Facebook only 2 or 3 months ago, and only very reluctantly. In fact, people like you who decided to spread information only through Facebook and not via a website everybody can freely access more or less forced me to do that.

It may be hard for you to understand, but I know a lot of people who are not on Facebook and don't ever want to be, so your advice of "don't use websites to spread info, use Facebook instead" sounds stupid to me.

If we really need another scene website or not is a different question. But somebody here recently complained about the trend that more and more people prefer to discuss things instead of actually doing things, and I think he really has a point...

What I miss in the demoscene web ecosystem:

- a comprehensive wiki, with deep infos about the parties & group history, and so on... The scene.nl wiki was quite good IIRC but it vanished

- a comprehensive scener directory, so you can have a list of the sceners in a given area and their specialities in a few clics.
A while ago I was thinking about trying to make this on ojuice.net, with ojuice.net/yourhandle as a "scener business card".
Now with the contributions list on pouet it may be less relevant, I don't know.

- a blog/magazine with quality review of demo productions.

- a repository of high-quality video captures. Basically an up-to-date wurstcaptures or capped.
(yes video captures are bad but are so useful when you want to have a demoshow in your living room or at a party)
(right now I'm ripping them from YouTube. Annikras, Salinga & co >> what about uploading your files directly on a http/ftp please? :d)

wullon: summed up in one word, "content".

Kylearan...

Ah. That was'nt my point to let people use Facebook. I just have seen the last years, that just few people watch on websites and most internet user use facebook, twitter or something else.

Don't get me wrong. I also like webpages with interesting contents... But why bothering with programming a site which aren't visited ?

What i really miss is a complete szene related search engine and list of all szene related sites out there. :)

why host video on a http/ftp when youtube can host them for you?!

Gargaj: yes, great content is a rare species.
(BTW, Hugi is actually doing a pretty job producing/gathering content, but the diskmag format - even if I love it - is a bit outdated in the web & mobile era)

To avoid the YouTube compression-pass & to have them offline!

right, offline on a http/ftp

Maali, of course the purpose of a HTTP/FTP/torrent repository would be to easily fetch them on your own harddrive, not to play them "on the cloud" :).

It could be a website about cakes. And Pies.

The question is not what to do with it, but who's going to do it. As soon as you find that person, then you can ask them what they're going to do. :P

Hi,

OK, just because the Most Wanted section does not appear for logged-on users in default layout, we are seeking an admin now after the site was devised.

http://wanted.scene.org/post/34/demoscene-org-admin-community-manager
It does appear if you're logged out or if you make a new account. Layouts on older account have not been changed :)

Yes Gargaj. I have the feeling many seasoned poueters \m/ keep logged-on with the SSO nowadays and/or arriving from another SceneID ring member-site and therefore do miss out on the Most Wanted section. I'd, for one, would more than happily trade "coup de coeur" or "watchlist" layout placeholders for it although also aware one can already apply these customization on a personal basis with the customizer 2000.

Anyways, I already much appreciate all the work done since the last years on the site for sure !
