10th Annual Scene.org Awards - Public Choice voting
category: general [glöplog]
Oh my god, what are you guys (the sceneorg awards people), MTV? Are you genuinely amazed people would post "please vote for me" things on facebook? It's a competition, this is what happens!
And you know what, people spamming for votes beyond Pouet is a *great* way to get the scene better known.
I'm all with plek and rez here (minus the drama), and I think that gloom and Blueberry and the whole lot are acting like elitist sorority girls.
We've all accepted demoparty results being namevotes and beervotes as much as quality votes. How can you expect the sceneorg public choice to be any different?

Because they always were, until last year that is. Blueberry, Smash and Puryx have already covered this pretty well, so read up on what those guys wrote. We've all accepted demoparty results being namevotes and beervotes as much as quality votes. Vote collecting/ manipulation already happened in THE official eurocharts days in early 90's. .. Its à scene tradition.. ;)
Glooms last argument is great, "no, it is not"
no explanation needed, Let us call it 10th annual Gloom awards.

with the most amazing "glooms choice of publics choice" category
+1 skrebbel
gloom, you are just completely wrong here.

i think i'll call it "i rather stay at the boozembly hills drinking beer than go inside the hall to support your circle jerk"
it´s funny how this is again turning into the (I´d almost say, ususal) "The scene.org awards sucks and means nothing at all"-club, but for some reason you´re STILL debating like fuck about it.
Maybe the awards does not reflect the opinion of everyone, but they SURE make a lot of people REFLECT about the releases/nominees. Maybe not that bad after all.

This thread has certainly gotten out of proportions - please try to use common sense here. There's nothing wrong in advertising your production for being nominated for a Public Choice award and asking people to vote for it.
What counts as someone manipulating the results is not something that can be answered easily. We tried to clarify that by writing the voting rules in length, but obviously that didn't work out too well. Some voting scams can be detected by checking the voting statistics, volume, source ip addresses, referrer ip's, timestamps, etc. but to give an exact answer to what warrants as a fake voting is not that easy.
Here's another attempt, with revised voting rules.

This thread really shows that the old elitist ways of thinking are all but gone, they just surface more sophisticated these days.
If you want to limit the public choice award to "sceners" vote live during the ceremony with clapping or an intranet-poll or whatever. I dont think razors prod is the best but i will vote for them(if possible). Just because.

wysiwtf: which will change/mean exactly what in regards to the discussion?
Also you´re implying something which have not been said at all:

Just because something is happening or it is a "tradition" doesn't mean it's a good thing. If they (scene.org people) want to and have means to prevent it I think they are free to do that. Now if you don't like that it's a different matter and you can just choose not to accept any possible awards and not participate to the ceremony, just like nosfe implied. But I don't think refusing not to be nominated is up to you really.
dubmood/nosfe: well, you're entitled to your opinions of course, but in my experience, the successful outreach attempts are those which actually passes information along which is absorbed by the recipient. Clickety-clickety-vote surely is not that. Granted, outreach is not really within the scope of the debate (that said, this thread is now so full of bile and random rubbish that I no longer really know what it's about), but I'd gladly rather sit down and discuss THAT aspect of it at a party than doing rounds and rounds of "Yes it is" - "No it isn't!" on a forum where nobody really cares what the other person says because they're just angry (for whatever reason).
Ok I should have probably said "people who check pouet/care for demos" instead.
The elitism is worse, anyway.

Wait, what? we have 9 pages of scene awards crew saying the direct opposite and suddenly we need to use common sense because you just changed opinion? well, I call victory. I am glad pouet still rulez. Now, that prod for VIP2012 were was I....
\o/
Also, I actually find it genuinely amusing that on one side of my screen is some random angry scener going "The Awards are just elitist bullshit!" and on the other side of my screen is the 60+ threads with over 900 e-mails from and to the Scene.org Awards staff AND jury, having a democratic debate about everything that goes into both the organizing and execution of the awards. Haters gonna hate.
dubmood: you should probably stop quoting just the bits you like then. The full quote reads:
This is not any different from the voting guidelines that were posted in the first post of this thread, simply a clarification upon THOSE clarifications again.
Smash hit the nail on the head several pages back: if you win a popularity contest because you asked everyone to vote for you, it's doesn't mean anything. That's what's been said less blutly all along.

WHAT! here i am, trying to get people to play by the rules like the good choirboy that i am, and then they unrule the rules! what an outrage!
anyway, basically, as i said on page 1,
i can't remember what the third bullet was though, now there's just two left :)

seriously though, the rules were most probably imposed because of the last three bullets in the list (automation and fake identities), which are basically the bane of any online voting anyway. banning advertising is sort of on the verge of being reasonable and difficult to judge or control.

ah, it was "Recruiting people to create new SceneID accounts with the specific purpose to only vote for your prod", so i guess that's now allowed!
Hopefully that wasn't Melwyns intention.

the difference between normal people and gloom, is that normal people understand that our fans are real people who likes us enough to use their brain and hands to create an account to vote for us while gloom think we are using (and used last year) botnet and all the stuff (it's totally wrong and never happened of course).
back in the one days one group printed out a huge amount of votesheet copies, and then used them to vote their opponent in the democompo. the other group got disqualified for fakevoting. :D
Ironically look at what I just received in my mailbox:
