Also, have you noticed how all really good productions are always made by old labels? Groups like TBL, Fairlight, MFX, etc. The youngest who are still on par with them are newcomers of the 2000s, like Conspiracy. I'm not saying there are absolutely no talented GenZ sceners, but they are remarkably scarce.
Talented people have always been in short supply throughout the ages. The new generations are no different in this regard. They are neither worse nor better.
Making good productions takes time and dedication. As long as there's interest from a few people, good demos and intros will continue to emerge.
I could be wrong, but things seem to have always been this way.
I agree that creativity is a huge part of it. I don't think the overall creativity has decreased tho.
I'll give examples of "newer" coders in the game with obvious high end technical and creative skills tho, because I believe that we have this kind of thing still going in the scene (with first release date in brackets):
LJ (2015), yx (2018), klos (2019), evilryu (2016), juvi (2021)
(I could go on; this are just the first few handles that came to mind and is by no means complete). I believe all we need to do is wait, and we'll definitely see more and more bangers by younger people.
I'd also like to add: The skill requirement for pumping out bangers is immense, as in super broad thematically & you can't suck at any one of them. That shit requires some serious time & commitment to learn & master. => obviously people that are in the compos for 20 years will generally have the more kickass prods, because of the number practice hours

The demoscene is a generational thing, to the extent that it is mainly constituted by the generation of people who were the first to have access to home computers during childhood and adolescence.

Nope. Just a clever usage of wget ;)

That was again a great event with a lot of wonderful people - thanks to all the organizers for making this happen!
@ham
True, talent is exceptional - and that's exactly it's always been scarce. But it's not the kind of scarcity I'm pointing at. The demoscene is on the decline everywhere.
Just look at Hungary. In 1996, we had groups like Astroidea, Shock!, Majic 12, Urinate, and I could go on. In that year, we had parties every month, some of them with over 1000 visitors. Meanwhile, there was hardly any internet yet, and the country itself was kind of isolated, as travel was expensive, particularly for Hungarian sceners. Yet we still thrived. Fast forward 30 years: there's fast internet, travel is dirt cheap, but where's the demoscene? Sure, we still have some, but it's a far cry from those times. Right now there's only 1 regular demoparty in Hungary, and that's Arok, a retro event. 90% of the demoscene is old faces still keeping the spirit. The same happened everywhere: Poland, Finland, Sweden, you name it.
So yes, what @Tom said. Exactly.
One may say the scene won't disappear, but evolve. Why yes, it is one way to say it. When an old restaurant closes, and a McDonald's opens in its place, that's also evolution in some way. But the old restaurant is gone, and those who go to McDonald's will never even understand it.
Eventually, someone may realize that McDonald's is shit, and open a new restaurant. Maybe he heard of the old one, but he never visited it. He will do his best to mimick it. Will that be successful? Maybe, maybe not. Most likely not - it's a different restaurant after all.
And this will affect the Demoscene. So much for "intangible heritage".

@AzzaroMWI where you were from Revision by the way? Hope you come to Evoke!
"Talent" just is a headstart reducing practice hours to master the field from 10,000 to maybe 9,000.
Yeah, but:
An absolutely vanishing small proportion of "home computer users" of the 80s/90s made anything of note that was noticed more broadly, and many home computer users back then would have had no idea that demos even existed. Just like most kids who learn guitar didn't end up redefining the instrument, and most teenagers who fucked around with Protracker didn't end up inventing dubstep.
Kind of like today:
Video sharing platforms like TikTok, or gaming environments such as Roblox, are full of derivative shit that will long be forgotten, but I can guarantee if you know where to look (and I don't, cos I'm middle aged) there will be exactly the same level of creativity and innovation there, which will (as always) be noticed, mainstreamed, and end up influencing modern media in ways that we'll be completely ignorant to.

It's demoparty Tripadvisor time! My first time attending Revision, fucking loved it. Some thoughts:
The less-than-good:
- I left my table unattended for a while and when I returned, all of the floppies of my C64 release Get in the Van were gone. These were the last handful of a limited run and were meant for some friends. I don't think we should be taking things from random tables without asking. Hardly the end of the world, but... :(
- I agree that it was a shame about things running long/late; I had to bail before PC Demo started. I appreciate that the schedule is full of ace stuff so executing an event like this is a massive undertaking. Still, I wonder... could some things be tightened up?
- I missed my chance to collect my 3rd prize for Oldschool Music by five minutes because prizegiving started a bit late and my airport shuttle left at 12:00 (of course it absolutely needed to). A small, Mibri-specific whinge.
- It didn't affect me, but I heard that the hotel shuttles weren't particularly reliable...?
The really, really good:
- Meeting and indeed making so many scene friends.
- The quality of the compo entries was staggering at times. Wow.
- Partymeister was working beautifully as far as I could tell.
- The sound in the hall was big and beautiful.
- Booking MBR was a masterstroke. Set was a burner, crowd was fully into it.
- Fair play to the organisers for having Visage and Vincenzo play another set on Sunday. I stuck around to catch some of their first set, which I think started something like two hours late, but I couldn't really get into it at that point! Sunday afternoon's set was great fun.
- The outside area was lovely. Decent food, great drinks.
- 5k run in the sunshine! :D
- It was abundantly clear that the organisers were working mega hard all of the time, which is absolutely not taken for granted. You are all heroes for pulling this off. Thank you so much for everything. <3

@Krill yes, good point. I used it in the meaning of being able to create what needs to be created.
@Tom yes, you're right. In the foreword of the secretly existing Freax Vol. 2. I drew a parallel between computing and flying. There are many ways to fly. You can cram yourself into a crowded airliner, endure the screaming baby behind you, get delayed, get your luggage wrecked, your balls x-rayed... but you're still flying. That's one way. Or you can go paragliding. Or fly a Cessna. Or become a jet pilot and fly with the Blue Angels. That's all flying. Yet most people will only know the first one. It's difficult to explain how it feels to soar freely to someone who only ever flew tourist class. And they may argue that it's stupid because it won't get you from A to B efficiently.
Demoparties are actually quite a bit like air shows.

Reminds me of somebody nicking a single unmarked disk containing sources to +H2K from my table at Mekka+Symposium 2000 while it wasn't yet quite finished. Luckily i had backups.
Who the hell steals floppy disks at a demoscene party?!
if demoparties are actually quite a bit like air shows, i guess air pirates
3 glöps, 0 prods

Forcing yourself into places you’re clearly not welcome in is not something I’d flex about, but go off queen
Oh oh, the amount of butthurt. Little darling, I was here before you survived the abortion. But don't pull pouet lower than it already is.
@Krill
Your +H2K is a quarter century old. Now I feel really old, even more than the last 4 days... missed you at the party ;)

+1 for banning all AI generated content in compos, esp. when used for soundtracks.
+1 for no-ai-rule.

And yet you’ve contributed absolutely nothing of value.
Know your limits and walk away 🥰
Maybe you should know who you're talking to, little cupcake. Also, if you have something to say, you had 4 days at the party to say it in my face. Were you shivering under a table? I didn't notice you, I was busy having fun with my old friends.
