The 5th Annual Scene Awards

category: general [glöplog]
The breakthrough thing has been debated for a while now. Personally I like to consider a "breakthrough" as the moment of taking your own level and excelling it in a spectacular fashion. In that matter, it can be your thousandth prod if you all of a sudden win Assembly out of nothing.

It's a very... "iffy" category (much like Best Direction), especially because a) there's no official exact description (not on the site at least) and b) the jury decisions don't always mirror the assumed concept.

What boring pieces of shitty productions in there. Only exception ASD's evolution of vision.

I'd rather see all the whining people starting their own awards with equally established sceners in the jury. And I'd also like to see how they could get different results, and what the "satisfactory" nominations would be.
Also, it would be very cool to see them sitting down and producing something cool enough to kick the "usual" mfx/tbl/flt/cns bunch out of their well radicated thrones.

I totally second dixan here, it seems, considering the results, like the scene awards only serves as a selfreward for the jury members and their friends. Sorry if i offence anyone, i don't want to, i just wish to express my point of view.

I absolutely see the point for "Solaris"

While others don't. The tricky bit is that a breakthrough can be considered both a leap in quality as well as new, promising team skimming to the top.

On one hand Brainstorm has been around since fire has been harnessed, on the other hand, they've definitely made a name for themselves (again?) this year.

Well, that would take effort on their behalf. It's so much easier to just sit around and bitch about it!

I totally second nystep here, all the awards should be given to Gasman for being so great.

(translation: nystep, I think you've slightly misrepresented Dixan's opinion there)

abandon all existing categories and make a new one called 'the best noisedemo'
then i could at least get nominated once!

Or how about "best artistic qualities". That would definitely be fun :D
added on the 2007-03-02 11:54:03 by Preacher Preacher
preacher indeed :-)

"best generally accepted ART demo", "best alternative ART demo", "best ART demo not by the nordic consipiracy", "most original ART demo" and "best ART in an ART demo" categories would kick ass!

Meh, the selection is more diverse this year. Eventhough I'm not really pro multiple nominations..

:D these categories should be such a great improvement uncle-x! =)

Sorry, i hugelly respect your work uncle-x, but i must say i have problems with seeing a demo like dieties being so nominated, especially in the "best soundtrack" category in fact. You may admit it puts some discredit to the nominations. Other than that, I really disliked the color scheme there, which wasted much of the experience for me. So all in all, it looks like an average demo to me.

Despite this, you know that i really appreciate you as a person uncle-x, and if i have the chance i'll offer you 3 beers at breakpoint (admiting i'll be able to come..that's still a hard point to solve out for me).

Gargaj, there is no mistake, the color scheme used in deities is a no go, in my eyes.

the nominations are the average of the opinions of ~20 people with very different opinions. for every person going "where's 1995 in best demo" there is someone else going "where's ephidrena". because the result is an average, the chances are most people will be dissatisfied, but all for different reasons.

from my own point of view i dont quite understand why track one was nominated so much - it wasnt even _our_ best demo this year (altho it's nice to be rewarded for our 3 days of damn hard work at assembly :)) - but i'm not gonna complain too much. :)

"slightly" in the sense of dick cheney "slightly" misaiming during hunting, yeah... :D

nystep: i put an emphasis on "disliked". "disliked" means it's your own opinion, while the scene.org awards jury tries to find a cross-section of an accumulated opinion. in other words, just because you don't like something doesn't mean it shouldnt be awarded :)

Gargaj, i absolutelly agree, in the sense that i think, on the countrary of dixan's opinion, that i got plently your point for once. ;-) I respect the jury's decisions, despite I don't agree it completelly. as smash said, i'd have expected to see 1995 nominated as best demo instead of deities.

And well, i will like chaos theory as soon as it runs at more than 2 fps on my machine ;-).

'Winnerdemo' by Metalvotze wasn't nominated either, if i recall correctly..

*ziiiing!*

nystep you do know you don't need to apologise for having your own opinions:-)

i'm personally very happy that from our two 'big' demos of 2006 deities got nominated over 1995 in so many categories.. just because deities was something that we really enjoyed making (for me it was a big step to make a psy-trance demo since i really don't like that particular music genre that much) whilst 1995 was "just" a coldly calculated crowdpleaser (that's probably why its in the public's choice category instead :-)

i love all the nominations and totally agree!! the jury rules! (really)

unfortunately derealization/dhs is nominated, now i can't whine about no atari here :-(

damn straight. screbble. I've always liked the awards; but this year's seem a much better cross-section of the scene's past 12 months. I'm impressed.

no, it does not put any discredit on anything at all. deities got its nomination (at least i feel so about it) for its style consciousness. it doesn't matter if you are into psytrance or not (i am not), but this is probably the only soundtrack out of the nominated ones which would go onto vinyl and get played at parties.

except that psy-djs usually spin cds and no vinyl :)
and yes i really liked the track.

holy fuck, you should have seen that! crying sceners out on the street, slashing their wrists with cracked mainboards!
