Breakpoint 2007

scamp:

great news! I'll take DeluxePaint with me ;-)

keops:

A Falcon with Centurbo 060 (SDRAM, 80/100Mhz 68060, DSP) is easily twice faster than an amiga AGA/060, but I think that despiting that it would be more balanced than allowing Amiga+CyberstormPPC entries. It could be fun but I think that people who has presented productions these years like IRIS, TBL etc should decide that taking into account that a Falcon060 is way faster than a 060 AGA miggy.

keops if you have contact to stanz tell him to not forget picwin.tk ;D
Just to make this clear: Platform compos at Breakpoint are platform compos, and we'll sure not open the can of worms involved in changing that. We'd never put Atari entries into an Amiga compo. The day Atari+Amiga are in the same compo is the same day that PC+Mac+XBox360 etc are in the same compo - in other words, the day we've dropped platform compos and decided to go with compos seperated by comparable hardware power like many other parties do these days.

If we see activity from the Atari scene in the future on Breakpoint, there indeed possibly might be dedicated Atari compos held at one of the future BP editions. To make this happen we would need to see some activity (Atari releases in the real wild compo for example, or an unofficial Atari compo organized by Atari users themselves) on that platform at BP beforehand.

future BP editions.. great! never stop orginizing! BP forever! Size limits are nore forever the same they have to go along with the demoscene market :)

nore = not (sorry bout that)

Scamp: Atari releases are too rare to have their own compo at BP at the moment anyway.

Who knows, announcing an Atari compo at BP08 could get some people motivated ;)

scamp, fair enough, point taken :)

Well, it ain't my party, but my 2 cents anyway :-).

There is no point what so ever anymore in platform specific compos, except for to revel in nostalgia. Amiga, C64, Atari and all others, once great demo platforms, are now just one step from oblivion as no truly new groups are born - it is just the old guys who developed their tech and knowledge years ago who keep on creating a new demo now and then. It is great that they do, but if new people don't start working on the platform, it will disappear sooner or later.

Instead of platform specifity compos should be "hardware era-based", e.g. pre year 93 or current hardware. So C64s hand in hand with VIC and Speccys, oldskool PCs with Amiga 500, Ataris etc, and modern hardware with whatever you get from the shop (incl. the latest PPC stuff for Amiga).

At the end of the day What better reason is there to create a high end Amiga entry but to kick the butt of PC entries (happened at ASM twice with Amiga entries winning the demo compo - and that's even with "stupid gamers" voting)?

I see no difference in the disappearance of tracked music compo to the (eventual) disappearance of platform specific compos. The tools used or the technical black magic employed do matter, but the end result always matters more.

abyss, i agree, but when i suggested as much (tried it twice) it took a looong time till the screaming subsided, and even longer till the ringing in my ears stopped, and after going through that twice i decided that pushing what i think is right in this regard is not worth the loss of my hearing.

all meant figureatively, of course.

still, it would have been fun to give tbl a rematch.

With ~15 demos/intros for Amiga and C64 each, and ~60 demos/intros for the PC, I still think platform compos make sense.

A combined compo with Amiga+PC+everything else would last several hours. The Amiga dudes would not kick some PC asses, but everyone would get bored and hate it.

So, for Breakpoint combined compos would mean to have 3-4 hardware power levels, which would result in the Amiga not competing with the PC. Some consoles would be competing with PCs, and maybe 1 entry of the long-dead mac scene.

And for that we'd kill off all advantages that platform compos bring by basicly making everything a "wild compo" - namely the advantage that there are *sceners active on that specific platform organizing the compo in question*, giving much better working compos and more confidence for the sceners handing in submissions.

You can't compare the situation with Assembly which has only a quarter of those releases. Things that work for Assembly don't necessarily work for Breakpoint.

Just as selling our scene history to the devil and converting our party to a fucking gamer party won't work for Breakpoint (sorry, could not resist ;)

scamp, one can see you've never been to ASM ;)

I don't see much of a problem in having combined compos for similar platforms. Atari 8 bit vs C64 for example, or AGA Amiga vs Falcon.
So having a 8 bit compo, a 16/32 bit compo and a modern PC + modern consoles compo would be fine with me.

KB: Yes, it's sad I never came round to it.

Maybe I should give this a visit?

"ASSEMBLY Winter '07 is a pure gaming party held on the 27th to 29th of April 2007 at Pirkkahalli, Tampere, Finland."

No, really, you know I'm an anti-gamer-bigot, but to me this awfully smells just like another "we do parties for our ego, so the bigger the party is, the bigger our ego will be - hm, there are more gamers than sceners, let's focus on them then and just abuse the demoscene part to bullshit the press and officials by calling us an art movement" concept we've seen many once-great demoparty die from.

But then again, yes, probably I'm just too pessimistic, and I sure wish the ASM the very best for the future - and it's off-topic anyway.

Still I do think that the route Breakpoint has taken during the last 2 years (making sure that we've got active sceners from all platforms we do compos for in our team) is the right route to go. My impression is that the C64 and Amiga sceners are far more happy with that than with what we had before, and that's what counts to me.

Actually ASM also splits compos to "combined" and "oldskool", so in that effect it's almost the same.

At the end of the day, the BP team are doing a GREAT job, and BP rocks as it is and will no doubt rock this year too.

Scamp,

I'm not saying what works for ASM works 100% for BP, and please don't interpret what I'm saying as comparing dick sizes of ASM and BP :-). I'm simply speaking my opinion, which is also very much reflected at ASM rules.

As for ASM selling out and whatever, I think the quality of the compos continue to speak for themselves. Also a lot of sceners previously sceptical of ASM are typically a lot less sceptical once they visit the party, which I think goes to say quite a lot. But hey, this wasn't a dick size competition :-).

ASM Winter is a different party altogether, and not even relevant in this discussion.

I know the pain of setting compo rules. I was the one who enforced the ASM originated rule of PC compos also supporting Sound Blaster in around 1996 when everyone in the scene (incl. me) was still in love with the dead GUSes (=time to move on). I introduced the idea of combined compos years ago because I what I believe and stated in this forum. Doesn't mean I'm or ASMORG is the absolute authority in these matters, but we have made hard decisions and quite many times it has paid off.

Now, I think BP compos will rule and I salut you guys for making hard decisions. Everybody in this forum can bitch and whine, but until they do the same as BP organizers: go and actually face all the facts, think it thru and think what is best for the compos, it's nothing but bitching and whining. And besides, BP != scene. If you don't like the rule, participate somewhere else.

However, I think it is marvelous that so many sceners passionately care for BP. It's a tremendous thing, but trying to be "all things for every scener" can be demanding.

that's why we are inerciademoparty (don't forget to come) think many times about our visitors and what they would like to have in the party. we really think hard to accomodate every wish from every visitor.

and now, i'll post a picture of our last edition:

thanks metapat for being there, at least :)
