yes, the standard dri subsystem is disabled with an nvidia card, but that does not mean that you do not have direct rendering on nvidia, because they are using an own infrastructure to manage direct rendering... ... its some sort of proprietary stuff, but it works very good (for me)

Possibly, but the issue is that there's no compelling reason to tell people off for using a commerical OS with drivers that actually work for me. Especially when the solution to using Linux without a graphics card chugging along in first gear requires buying new hardware.

It's like telling people to ditch their vintage C64 and buy a new PC so they can run GEM inside an emulator, or horseshit like that. (Okay, it's a bad example. Make me a new XHTML 1.1 HOORAY button to celebrate ;))

Ofcourse you'd have to compile it, and fix all incompatibilities with modern day hardware yourself. (Where have I heard this before... ;-))

its not. there is a simple reason why you should make demos for linux: i run linux because i wont buy windows and dont want to get my ass busted, and i want you to make kool demo shock to linux user brain. prove that my box can be used for more than hacking and webservers. its easy on windows - but can you make my X11 dance?

Yeah, the svgalib mailing list archives end in June 2003, 3 years ago.
DirectFB's hardware support list is still stunning... http://www.directfb.org/index.php?path=Main%2FSupport%2FGraphics Not much better than 3 years ago, when I last coded with DirectFB.

And that just proves my point which was: If Linux people would have ditched all the X11-crap years ago and strongly supported DirectFB, then it could be a really really nice graphics API today. But it just never got any attention in the Linux-community. Everyone said "noone needs that we have X11" etc. It's what I said before... Unix-people have some kind of phobia against anyhting new.

That's true. If everyone was like that, there would be no DirectFB project. But the "big mass" of Linux-users just follows the path of 30 years UNIX, and are very religious about it.

I know that because I was an avid Linux user, too... some years ago. Five years of Linux and its community and I had enough of it. And btw, I once started a flamewar myself by telling demosceners that Linux would be better for them (that was around 1999 I think). :-)

i dont think that you know that much (rtfm helps a lot), because you confound linux with dos ;) dri ist *just* another driver implementation, nothing more nothing less, and the api, interfaces etc remain the same... dri is a standard, but only a standard interface layer, and you are always free to write your own interface if you want to... but there is a point where you can not mess around = the kernel, and this is the difference to dos :) you, as an user or programmer, will never see dri, because that is something which happens at the driver level, but the api (for example libgl) remains the same...

Here some more...
"DRI stands for Direct Rendering Infrastructure, and is a set of software that provides Direct Rendering for OpenGL contexts. It provides libGL (by Mesa, with software fallbacks too), libglx (by Mesa), a card-specific driver and a DRM, Direct Rendering Manager, that's a kernel module that manages the requests for hardware and controls the hardware itself. NVIDIA's drivers DON'T use DRI, they use their own infrastructure to manage Direct Rendering."


and why the complains about directfb an svgalib? there are many good and decent apis around...

..and quake 4 runs faster than on my windows installation :) on x11, with a standard implementation... thats proof enough for me :)

well i dont think they really cared for people playing 12 hours straight... it didnt seem as if the engine was ever throwing away textures, so after 12 hours i had a full swap partition.

allright. well i admit there are of course a lot of annoyances with the system, as there are always, but i think they are minor and initial, and all of these get fixed ultimately, because coders make the decisions, not marketing people. this can have drawbacks of course, however i can't see windows still being around in 100 years. microsoft is not a company that is able to survive that long. but who can kill the gnu?

wow... unfortunately it has ridiculous dependencies... i have heaps of trouble getting this to work... the pd it requires has not been updated and requires manual building, latest ogre has been made by windows people... it builds well, but installs badly, plus some dependencies are not being checked during configure. i'm amazed at how much shit they waded through to realize this ;)
