You can't really compare the two I think. At asm the gamers watch the compos because they have to (and I bet some of them are not really happy to do so) otherwise they are publicly humiliated by the announcer/spotlight. And the reason is because they are in the same hall.
Nvscene is just a small (and properly separated) part of nvision, which is scattered around a bigass convention center. Shutting down all of it for the compos would be not only arrogant but also stupid.

zoom: i agree, there isn't a unique 'successful' party model (de facto and fortunately), but i still have the far impression that demos didn't get enough publicity/visiblity at nvision.
I gotta say that while the audience is certainly a forced one at asm, my impression is that the democompo is still enjoyable even for most of the gamers. It's the million other compos that draw much more protest and I've seen some awed faces at the democompo :P
That's true, but I guess they just want to start out small and slow and see the reactions. With the hopefully positive feedbacks maybe they can pull it more into spotlight next year.

zest, you also have to know that asm can say "take it or leave it. this is a demoparty", whereas nvidia can't/won't. nvision has not been organised in order to do demoscene stuff. nvision is organised for completely different, commercial, purposes - we're simply lucky that the demoscene kind of matches those purposes. but it can't replace them.
zest won't rest until nvidia submits to the fact that vectorballs are all the 3d you need :)
and without the demoscene there wouldnt even be 3D! earth would still be flat!

Considering that at NVScene the demoparty hall was entirely different from the LAN party, I would say making those people stop what they are doing and making watch demos would be a retarded idea.

Shitloads of it, because there were a bunch of sceners talking to a bunch of people, and seminars (such as mine that due to some coincidence had over 100 people in the audience). Criticizing it without having any fucking clue is just lamer bullshit.

i agree that it's hardly comparable, but some figures are : you are talking about 100 people, compared to the 3000 asm gamers (plus hundreds of visitors).

The only problem with your reasoning Zest is that you never know what people you're gonna reach when doing outreach. They come from very unexpected groups, and doing it the way you suggest (which stinks of marketing courses and focus-grouped horrors) is pre-supposing too much.

why t f do you think they were corpo men? After my speech for example I mostly chated with developpers (some of them were even demomlaers in the past). And I already got several mails making questions and two of them are already implementing raymarchers in shaders (they sent me some screenshots), perhapse they will submit to a party. I mean, most of the poeple attending the seminars were developpers, and we showd them that demoscene is a way to do all that you are not allowed to do in your job. Why do you say "future demomakers aren't to be found among a bunch of corpo men". Really, please calm down, you have a wrong perception of the nvscene I think.

As for ASM force feeding demos on gamers, yes, in a way we do that. However, looking at our visitor surveys, the overwhelming majority wants to watch the demoscene compos. There are naturally people who don't want to, but that's to be expected. And no, that approach wouldn't work at Nvision =).
I finally got around watching the compo entries and there is damn impressive stuff in there.

i think critical mass for the north american demoscene was achieved in the mid-1990s, when NAID in Montreal attracted around 500 people each year. my perception is that, since then, the average age of the north american demoscener has gone up by a lot.
some enthusiasts of the demoscene in the san francisco bay area didn't show up to nvscene 2008 unfortunately, and others were only able to attend part of the time (on tuesday for the competitions). demosceners from elsewhere along the west coast (vancouver, seattle, portland, los angeles, san diego) were there in small numbers. For comparison, NAID seemed to have a really high turnout rate from demosceners within 1000 miles (1600 km) of the party.

We believe the scene should return to its former glory, and we also believe that kids like us are its future. The demo scene to come is not grim, and we are the proof."
