I'd like to point out that *anybody* with half a clue who supports "open source" is not against making a profitable business out of it. It's not about charity. Never was supposed to be.

Not even Stallman, who certainly can be considered a zealot on any terms, is not opposed to making money out of OSS.

That's it, Firefox is a fucking furry browser! I'll never use it again! Blech!

recreating something that hasn't been a relevant contender in the OS field for years and years just because of nostalgic and "oh, what could have been!"-feelings is equally stupid.

You're posting this on a website where people foam at the mouth about obscure platforms, size coding on a calculator and where people do their utmost to justify corporate sponsorship going fist deep into the most bizarre tech-related hobby ever.

Yeah. You tell them, boy.

lets talk about atari vs. amiga instead!!1one

Nah, atari & amiga are both death, this is more like dos vs. windows (except that I'm on the winning side this time ;-)

if there's a revenue (attention not income!) there must be some sort of trade, or better a bunch of over-dedicated beings that will buy whatever bears a logo or the name of their lovely cult. but i highly doubt that you can make 65 million that way...

in the end, apparently your "free" software doesn't seem as "free" as it is said to be. i seriously started to think that all of this open source business is one of the best marketing strategies that is ever made.

why? think of it... no company or just a charity or if you want to name it in a fancier way "foundation" thus less taxes, no liability, nowhere to sink a hell lot of money. start to gather a "community" and if you're lucky it becomes a cult that will do whatever you say. apparently there is a revenue too. though, the revenue is less compared to commercial companies of the same size, but that's ok. because you have a bunch of geeks in your cult that will do the job for you for free so you just get to share the money in-between key-people while all those poor coders work their ass off for your life. in the end you don't make 5 billion and share it with 10.000 people but you make 100 million and share it with 10 people.

holy crap, this is the best form of capitalism AND greed ever to exist.

i'm not against open source by the way. i'm against those of you who advocate it like the damn thing is completely innocent and white.

Decipher: i don't think anyone said so...

the mere fact is that Firefox is pwning IE7/8 so badly, it makes websurf and webapps so easier and smoother. And all that at no cost for the enduser. I have glady joined the firefox cult.

Exactly. And complaining is cheap, tell us what we should do instead of using this free, quite decent, browser.
No matter how you put it, calling open source software "greed" is pretty misguided. Especially considering the alternatives.

do the job for you for free

Many people have already said it, but once again: Open source and free code are totally different things. You can charge money for open source, and a lot of people are actually paid to write open source. For example, companies like Sun are investing a shitload of money in open source.

and share it with 10 people.

Mozilla has more than 100 employees. But that doesn't really matter, all it's profits are invested back into the Mozilla project.

Sure, but I'd say there is a pretty clear distinction between a guy doing TI-89 calculator demos for fun or a team of 30 trying to _rewrite_ something that has no chance of survival.

Both are pointless I guess, but boy is the first more fun. :)

none of us has ever said you shouldn't use firefox. in fact i dont really care what anyone uses.

i'm just telling that if you advocate firefox or any other browser including opera, ie, safari or any other forms of 100% pure crap (e.g. linux distros or windows) you're not being helpful to your community instead you're trying to be a part of a really capitalist movement.

btw, Zest Stallman has said it millions of times... oh and tell you what to do: how about a big cup of shut the fuck up and to stop trying to convince people that open source is as white as it gets? because it's certainly greedy and capitalist. what makes it funny is, it's being capitalist under an anarcho-capitalist image.

and yep, this totally is a political issue... oh forgot the most important part:

Please explain me how open source is greedy or capitalist. I've never seen anyone claim that. It's a only a distribution model.

The exact same thing could be said of Opera or Safari : both closed source ( in the case of Safari, code only go from WebKit to Safari, not the other way around ). Oh and interstingly these 2 browsers are much more standards compliant than FireFox.

i explained it a few post back. instead of sharing 5 billion with 10.000 employees and paying a lot of government stuff, you get a "charity" and collect in-taxable donations while coders are coding for free for your purpose. this is a more free way of slave-labour done by hitler. and no one should say all the revenue is invested in the mozilla project because that would be one big lie. i wonder if the mozilla [b]corporation/b] publishes some sort of media that displays where the money is spent to its last cent. oh but wait, this is much of an expectation from the guys who don't even want to publish how much they made...
added on the 2008-06-18 21:36:41 by decipher decipher
It's quote voluntary "slave labour". No one's being obliged to contribute to anything, and anyone is fully entitled to do anything he or she wants with it, it being licensed under GPL. I'm sure that people offended by the idea of someone making money out of it do not contribute to the project. I see nothing greedy or capitalistic or wrong with this.

Decipher, the only thing I asked what your solution is, and what browser we should use then. I never promoted firefox, only said I think it is a decent browser. Still I need to STFU according to you.

You have not answered the question.
and i said that i'm not promoting any browser out there. just use whatever suits you the best but don't make any stupid stuff like cults out of it...

and that stfu was not for you rob :) it was for those who belonged to the cult and advocated open source like it is completely for the benefit of everyone.
