Do you all think we can revive the scene?
category: general [glöplog]
the small print:
we unfortunately cannot guarantee the scene will stay alive after the party. therefore, your best strategy to reach eternal fame would be not to delay your releases any further than this party. thank you for your cooperation.

sshh!
skrebbel: i was looking for your email but couldnt find it, could you enlighten me? :)
outline2008@scene.nl will do. or my nickname at scene.nl for personal stuff.

parapete: And I think you over-estimate the motivation.
Yup, absolutely, it's fair that some people will be more motivated about this than others. Most of the dissenters are people using Direct3D so I guess for them portability is not high on the list of priorities. :)
the scene is dying cos every two weeks some dick yells the scene is dying and a gazillion people actually bother to waste their precious freetime on responding for the gazillionth time that the scene is not.
parapete: I don't regard portability because I use d3d, I use d3d because I don't regard portability (in demos). By not considering portability, I believe I can make better demos, because I don't have to use the common subset of the platforms I support - I can fully utilize the platform I target. And I can get it done quicker, since I can take more short-cuts. Demos arent IMO high-quality software, they're dirty hacks meant to demolish the competition.
Is this thread about demoscene outreach/motivation/the debatable need for 'revival', or is it about "my way of doing demos is the best way of doing demos, you stupid hippie cunts"? This thread should come with an instruction manual!
kusma; relax, I'm agreeing with you. If you want to use D3D for whatever reason then that's fair enough. Bear in mind that all I suggested in the beginning was that more demos running on Linux might be a good outreach technique.
gloom; it puzzles me how you can justify travelling to America for demoscene outreach purposes and then promote this "we can't be bothered" attitude here. It seems like your motives are insincere. If you could come up with some argument as to why demos on Linux are not a good form of outreach then fair enough, but you don't seem to have done that.

parapete: I'm not worked up, so there's no need to relax in the first place ;)
I just don't think statements like "there's no excuse not to [insert personal preference]" is very meaningful. In fact, in this case it's pretty much just wrong, since there's lots of excuses not to (as proven already).

kusma; yup fair point but bear in mind that I also advocated getting someone else to do the porting. Chucking the sourcecode out into the open does not require a whole lot of effort. I only said 'relax' because I felt you were getting defensive, if I misinterpreted you I'm sorry.
pete: here's my anti demos-on-linux argument: "the scene doesnt need people who sit around recompiling their kernel and who smell of milk".
is that sufficient? :D
is that sufficient? :D
(i was half joking. but CS students often DO smell of milk!)
smash: Implying that all Linux users just sit around recompiling their kernel, How very original! And witty! Hilarious even!
pete: but the milk thing is cool with you?
You appear to be lowering the tone!
wait until he mentions beards ;)
My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard,
And their like
It's better than yours,
Damn right it's better than yours,
I can teach you,
But I have to charge

w0rd!
if you want demos on linux, write a goddamn d3d wrapper for wine.. might keep you occupied long enough to keep your mouth shut at least
Maali : I'm actually one step ahead of you there ;)
sheesh i haven't felt as much like making cp/m-related jokes in ages :))
pete: happy to see how it'll run debris and media error :)
Maali: Ah, no, sorry, misread you there. What I'm actually doing is a D3D-like wrapper on OpenGL.
fuck! milk!!
that's it!!! i've been wondering for *6 years*!!!
