Revision 2015 - 3rd to 6th April - Saarbrücken, Germany

category: parties [glöplog]
...and back on topic :)

Something that I've wanted to suggest/discuss regarding Revision to do with table layout.

I don't know if others feel the same, for me it's quite a let down to arrive late and have rear-facing desk. Being able to see the big-screen while being seated with my PC makes me feel connected to the Party: I can see beam slide announcements, join IRC chat while compos are on, tune in and out of compos while I'm working on prods. Being at a rear-facing desk feels like I'm missing out on that. And arriving early isn't always an option traveling from the rainy country on the west of Europe :) If I do arrive early then I feel like I'm forcing someone else to a backwards desk (perhaps they're ok with that and it's just me though :-P)

My personal ideal would be the same approach as Evoke, which has tables placed parallel with sides of hall. Of course this isn't quite as nice as sitting forwardly but yet everyone can see the screen equally rather than 2nd/1st class seats.

Another option would be to have all single layer desks and facing forward, but this would required twice as many power/net cables, lacks the middle area for running cables, and is not as sociable (nice to see mates sitting across) so not the best option in my view.

I know that making such a change doesn't come without a lot of planning, effort and consequences. Still it's something I strongly feel would be worthwhile if possible. Does anyone else agree? (or not) :)

cheers

Arriving early is also not guaranteed to help, it was already hard to find a free table row for, say, a > 5 people group at 13:00-14:00 on Friday this year. Sure it was cool that the partly was on instantly and so many people were already there, but it also made me a bit worried how packed the hall would be 5 hours later. :)
Just take the "RESERVED TO MEGAGROUP (15 seats)" paper stuck to the table, and throw them out. Voila, free seats :)

And here we go again with the social issues topic :)

i'll be sure to have "THIS TABLE IS RESERVED FOR ANTI-VEGAN DRUNK SEX OFFENDERS. SO, FUCK OFF!"-papers printed for next revision!
That's not really a social issue - it's been a rule for years now that there are no table reservations, yet half the hall is still covered with them.

We can take a look at some possibilities. Not making any promises though as (leaving all the technical stuff aside for now) table layouts as well as emergency exit route planning has to be approved by the authorities and they are not always very enthusiastic about deviations from official plans ;) Same goes for free roaming space and quite some other issues that will open up, like people then having to sit with their backs to the center alley etc.

But thanks for the input. I'll keep it in mind.

I totally hate the evoke table layout. At that small scale you always have people running behind you, unless you come early enough to get seats at the walls (which is "ok"). Regarding table layouts - single front facing is IMHO the best (but also has it drawbacks - as mentioned before - especially at large scale).

Don't think I posted in this thread yet, so I'm going to say that I think this year's Revision was great! For some reason I was not as stressed as previous years, despite rushing one production at the party and prepping for a seminar. Props to the compo team (gasman) for doing a good job and letting us fiddle a bit with getting our capture right. Food was great, especially having a vegan alternative when you're just not feeling like having meat. Didn't have any problems with drunk sceners, and earplugs solve most noise issues when resting/sleeping.

I don't think I mentioned this year btw but even as a non-vegan, the vegan options were refreshingly different from the usual fat+sugar diet :)

Speaking of diet, many thanks to Picard & Vickey for the cakes, they were delicious :D

On the tables, I don't know that I'd like the "Evoke layout". It might be okay in terms of viewing, but I agree I don't know that I'd want a bunch of people walking behind me all the time.

My only complaint on the tables is that the orange power sources don't reach far enough to service the tables near the inside aisle very well. If I sit in a seat at a table that directly abuts the aisle, my long charging cable can't even reach a power strip with a 1.5m extension on it that is plugged in to the orange sources. I'm not asking they be close enough I can put my laptop directly on the orange source, just that we don't have to chain power strips to be able to service everyone who sits at the four tables in a row that are closest to the inner aisle. Thanks!

oh and that ronny, lugoober and hoffman gig was so loud i couldn't even hear my own beer!

Maali, that is a god damn lie. You and I stood more or less right in front of one of the speakers next the the "dancefloor" talking for a few minutes. I actually think the volume was lower than usual, which I kinda liked.

That same The Party (I guess it was 1997) also had a super misguided official rave *in* the sleeping area from like 2 AM to 6 AM so we didn't even get to sleep at all the first night.

Then you should come to TRSAC 2014, they were playing friday night! .. they're called Endoplasmatix and might be include some more or less wellknown sceners

what ragnarok and kebby said.
demoparties are a place to meet "endlich normale leute" instead of all that p.c. hypocrite crowd popping up everywhere.
bonus hint: "normale leute" can be talked to directly, and usually cooperate if you treat them normally, too.

the only rules acceptable for a demoparty are compo rules anyway :)

btw.. did i read correctly? bitbreaker poisons the bbq with fake sausages? disgusting, tofugrillerlänge 3 meter speckig !

That is a fair point las, though I personally don't mind walkways behind seats, I tend to walk around all the tables to see what people are doing and say hello, and that's easier at Evoke. Still, I see how it's could be disruptive to have the hoards passing behind :P

But, as you say, perhaps at the larger scale of Revision this wouldn't be a problem since there's many more tables compared to Evoke - there wouldn't have to be a walk-way between each column of tables. For example in the current design, if each zone of tables between walkways was rotated 90 degrees then there would be the same number of walkways as before.

Thanks for the consideration D.Fox, sounds like there's even a bit more too it regarding authorities etc. than I had realised. No promises expected :)

too bad seemingly no capture of that "belgian beer for advanced users" seminar can be found =)

My only minus point about the party was indeed missing belgian beer seminar because of so late flight.

Depending on the beer it doesn´t make much difference ;)

@table layout: I don´t mind much about it - either layout has its benefits and drawbacks, thus just pick the one which fits the hall and organisatoric/tech setup best

@table reservations: it´s ok to reserve some, especially since many groups hardly meet completely apart form parties. just don´t complain if other sceners start to invade "your" places if the hall gets full while most of your places are still abandoned
