trace: what you're kind of saying there is you regret those thumbdowns. Fair enough, I'm sure I have some I regret somewhere too.
But then you're asking for a system where you can't make this kind of regrettable error. Then you can't regret it later, learn from it, and become a better person at the end. The fuck you is good for you man, keep it :D

I guess I care more about newbies feeling they are wasting their time here when they get thumb downs from the usual pouet trolls on their first prods or because they happen to chose platforms different than the usual. At that point they don't know who is worth listening to and if they feel like that they may just stop contributing.
Yes yes, I know, people should be mature enough and we don't want pussies around here. I know.

Also, more constructive without thumb downs? WTF? What's more constructive than honesty, as brutal as it may be?
that boy speaks the truth.

- Ben Croshaw.
so does he.
so there we have it. we need a new scoring system for ~10,000 users just because out of the three newbies each year (cos it aren't exactly hordes) one might actually find a thumb down offending and demotivating and leaves the scene forever to seek a career in hacking vending machines! excellent idea. i think we lose more newbies due to vulcanic eruptions!
hide all thumbs down for users whose glop count is less than 100... yay
smash: Ben Croshaw would probably never give a thumb up anyway
agree with the Ben Croshaw quote.
usually the comments aren't very useful though, if you wanted to use them as critiques of your productions.

hide all users whose based-on-demozoo-credited-in-production-count is less than 10... yay
Why, is it only the new, never-produced-anything people doing the thumbing down? Trace already proved it isn't :D
Ok, alternative solution: The existing voting system stays, and we keep the fuck you. What changes is we start telling the trolls to stfu or provide something constructive a bit more often, so people might get some helpful feedback rather than just "sucks".

psonice: stfu!
maali: explain why or stfu yourself :D
fuck no, i'll just settle with a thumb down instead!

word!
If it was possible to thumb comments up, that would pretty much solve the problem. As it is now, a "You're German, fuck you! *thumb down*" counts as much as a "I found the music pretentious and badly mixed, and a 10-minute white-noise overlay over a rotating sphere isn't exactly inspiring.. especially for your fifth demo... in .werkkzeug none-the-less. Sucks.", and that blows. I like the Digg/YouTube-system where comments can be rated, so that anything below, say, -5, is hidden by default (but can be shown). It would tell newbies that the normal Pouet-crowd are equally unimpressed by random troll-hate, and it would lead to increased activity on the site, which (as long as the DB can handle it) is All Good(tm).
I like that idea too. There is also the approach of making the text of comments that have been downvoted have less and less opacity.
or how about, for every down-vote, you could replace one letter with an animated gif of a cock?
I like that idea of rating comments too, but is it likely to happen? That would be a lot more work than pretty much anything else suggested.
gloom: sounds pretty cool...
Yeah, it's a bit like residue but for comments, and automated. I would even apply it to the BBS. There is so much noise around (just look at this thread).
gloom for President! \o/
I wouldn't care that much about someone who can't handle a

psonice: Yeah, it is indeed more work than any of the other suggestions, but I think it might be a good idea to do it well rather than doing it fast - especially when we're talking about a quite important change. Of course, it's all up to the people who actually develop on Pouet (who are now... just Gargaj?) so they'll of course have to make the final call. But yeah, I like this idea.
