Geek test

Here's my result:
Strange that I faired better than Optimus yet have never programmed graphics of any sort. In addition, I don't "play the games" and have never seen the Final Fantasy movie as was claimed in my results summary. It's almost as though the test is a complete load of rubbish...

You play the games, and you know what's up. Despite its horrible B-movie plot, you watched the Final Fantasy movie and thought it was neat. You probably just never tried to render anything yourself. Go read some .plan files, and poke around gamedev.net. Awesome awaits you.

Navis: why not? I use face normals for my backface detection all the time

You know what's up! That's no guarantee that you've made anything especially cool, but if you have, I'd like to see it. I'd encourage you to follow up your interest in graphics with university courses and programming projects. It's very rewarding, and careers are good too. And, there's no better place to start writing video games than with a good graphics engine. I salute you, nerd.
that test was stupid :-(

Afaik, one can use normals for this kind of operation, but D3D/OGL does that by looking at the winding of triangle !?
navis: the winding is used to determine the direction of the normal vector :)
now about that question
A) the normal vector of the plane should be used _once_ for every plane to perform the backface culling
B) ambient lighting is just added thus _zero_ normals involved
c) for the point lightsources the normal is used _many_ times (i used it per pixel in `Mooit`)
D) and the Z-fighting well uhm.. if you use the normal for backface culling you have less Z-fighting :)
