This depends on the product too, however. As a good example, Flash is such a "someone else's closed software product". However, in many ways Flash is comparable to an old computer with weird hardware accel features. You get some certain amount of sensible processing power (i.e. the scripting language is slow), certain ways of putting stuff on screen (generating a picture, doing stuff with vectors/spleens, etc), and that's it. The flash player isn't so different from many hw emulators.

Also, don't forget that all hardware platforms there ever was a decent scene on are all closed as well.

sure, there always has to be standardization, which usually means using a commercial product. That's why we can't use the "free, real man OS", and we have more GBA demos than GP32 demos, despite the lack of an official devkit. Some limits are worse than others - I mean these closed architecture 2D monitors! It'd be so much easier to do 3D if I didn't have to project everything down onto a 2D surface, but I can live with that. : D

I don't know about GP32, but besides the internal hardware being exactly the same in all iterations of the machine, it has fantastic documentation (GBATEK) and very good tutorials (Cearn).
While it lacks an official devkit, the current leading compiler toolchain, DevkitARM, is very very polished (and many GP32 developers use it too).
There is a nearly cycle-perfect emulator (no$gba) which runs full framerate at extremely crappy computers (and WINE), and which also has a very polished debugger version (costs €15 though). For free debugging, you can also use Visualboy Advance, but it is less featureful.
A proffesional GBA (now DS) developer on the GBAdev forum actually regularly whines about that the tools he is forced to use are worse than what is available to homebrewers.
The system itself is inexpensive, and rewriteable cartridges and cheap storage adapters (mini SD, etc) are very easy to get your hands on online. A fullfledged development system (Used GBA + New Homebrew Cartridge + Software) can be obtained for as little as €50 if you look around - I see SP's priced as low as €20 on my national used-stuff website right now. I don't see any GP32's or GP2X's at all.

Then we have flight404 once again... it's funny that an "outsider" finally achieved this way of commercialising demos (I know some demosceners who tried before him).
