A gamerlamer magazine interviewed kermit.

I tried to begin a project last summer to use the wiimote as a virtual camera, but I forgot that it's impossible to calculate rotations with just the accelerometer, then I decided to wait for this thing:

but it's too expensive for a piece of plastic. My idea was that with a fixed distance between the two accelerometers it would be possible to calculate rotations, but probably with an awful precision.

In pressed Wii games, there are two values that are put together to make the on-the-fly decryption key with which the Wii can actually execute the game. One in on the security ring of the manufactured disc

The barcode is totally _not_ related to the crypto of the binaries/assets. It's just an extra security measure to prevent people from booting backup discs. (which has allready been bypassed by modchips for ages)

and one is stored by every Wii to decrypt data (the static key). What's happened here is they've got the "Lego Star Wars" game key simply from the disc, and they've got the FULL ("master") key used to decrypt ONLY Lego Star Wars game

There is no such thing as a 'lego starwars key', all current DVD disks share the same common key. Using this key they can decrypt _any_ dvd game, not just lego starwars. (Though there's multiple stages of decryption, with different IV's and at some point you have to use an 'application key', but all can be derived using the 'common key')

through dumping Wii memory (this was done by disabling some of the ATi bridge that locks out the RAM during Gamecube mode).

'Disabling some of the ATI bridge' ? The RAM trick relies on the fact that the ARAM of gamecube (Auxiliary Ram, used for audio stuff I think) is emulated using a portion of the GDDR memory on a wii. They don't mem-clear this region when switching to gamecube mode. so by dumping ARAM from gamecube mode you can aqquire 16MB of GDDR. Fiddling with the address lines prior to dumping the ARAM lets you access other portions of the GDDR.

STILL, that's what's going on... Nintendo wouldn't be able to patch this with a firmware update. They'd have to change hardware keys and most DEFINITELY fix up the ATi lockout bridge too.

False. They can _definitly_ patch this easily with a firmware update. The fact that they have 'teh crypto keys' does't mean they can actually SIGN binaries. (Hint: maybe there was a trick involved in that department)

Gotta love the interwebs!

That's nothing against OpenGL vs. DirectX or Game engine talks :P

Does anyone think my idea of using that thingamabob with the constant distance between the two accelerometers to calculate rotations makes any sense?

Xernobyl: yes, check this (I can't longer find a "free version" of it) Of course as you supposed, it sucks a bit.
The only solution is to use a triaxial gyroscope or better the onboard smartcam of the wii with the IR dots coordinates.
added on the 2008-02-15 22:37:11 by bdk bdk
But then you have the contraint of having to aim at the dots.
added on the 2008-02-16 00:17:45 by xernobyl xernobyl
yes, that's the downside :|
Anyway since the wiimote camera can track up to 4 IR dots maybe some fancy geosphere made of them could help... ok that's NOT simple nor practival... :]
