Orgas, don't crank the volume.

I have to agree with gloom, sometimes you need to do some EQ:ing and add compression before pumping out things in the PA at demo parties.
There's a difference between "loud" and "ouch, that really hurts", and that difference can be controlled by adjusting the eq, not the volume. But of course, it totall depends on the situation.
I have been to parties where the music is too loud too, and I think it's a bad thing. You shouldn't need earplugs at a demo party.
People being stupid and saying "then don't sit at the desks, go outside and have a beer", please respect that it is up to each one of us to decide how to experience a demo party. If noone wants the tables and computers but only wants to booze, well, stop organizing demoparties and do 100% boozing-parties-with-sceners. But I don't think that everyone would want that, at least not to replace demoparties.
The good ideas seems to be: When in large hall, have more than one PA, at least a small system in the back, and don't crank up the volume that much. Use a good musician/sound-technician at the mixing console. Don't force ppl to use earplugs.
