Can we talk about Demoparties as creative environment (working vs raving)?

Thank you for your thoughts and experiences, folks!

I need about 24 hours to mentally arrive at a different environment. Which is why I prefer arriving a day early (if possible). And prefer sleeping at the venue. Having tested staying with friends and hotels: I just end up in an in-between state. Neither here nor there. Kinda in-between chairs. Which cripples my overall party experience. Can anyone relate to this?

Can relate. Being an orga at such events helps a lot with mentally arriving on time just by being on location earlier. Then again, sometimes the beginning of the event's start becomes blurry and it feels almost like I'm living there for a while now and a bunch of noisy neighbors moved in. So I have arrived at the location, but it takes another step to arrive at the party itself.

Being at an event for fewer days (usually when just being an attendee or guest) indeed sometimes makes me feel I was missing something or was unable to make/take as much out of it as I'd think I should have.

That said, I started sleeping in a close-by hotel at some event as an organizer and in that specific scenario it didn't really take away a significant amount of "being there" mentally. BTW, the reason was not having to carry sleeping equipment in trains, but me being older does welcome sleeping in an actual bed and (though I achieve this pretty well with ear plugs and sleeping mask) in silence and darkness.

Regarding the noise and packed schedule topic: TBH, I had and have a hard time imagining being an attendee at Revision specifically due to the extensive (both in levels and in duration), mostly acoustical, action that is going on, having less options to retreat than as an organizer.

While I understand the "DJ kept people busy while we prepare a compo block" thing, in general, I personally would've chosen nothing officially going on instead of another gig in the hall (main and second stage) during the day at times, leaving (more) room for people to chill/chat/work at their desks.

Going outside is mostly only an option if the weather allows and not needing much more equipment than a laptop (and shade) to get some work done. (There is a tent, though.)

Also being part of the "that Sunday compo block is too long and too late" group, I wonder if non-compo events need to be slashed until there is enough room. (Yeah, required preparation is a thing, but still?)

Full disclaimer for context: I was an orga at Revision on all editions except one up to (including) 2019, didn't find a way to help in the online editions during COVID, and have been significantly ill and/or family-bound on all IRL editions since then. :/

As a 26-year-old at Revision, this year I had to work on my prods and it was a huge bummer because I wanted to party, lol.
Last 2 years everything was prepared before the party but this year I did like a third of my 8K on Saturday night and I heard the people having fun and that made me sad :(

I feel like working in the party hinders the party, and I wouldn't trade the current experience for no events and being able to program because that's less stuff for people who just come to hang out. I felt like the problem was with me not hitting the deadline, but maybe it's different if you're in a group and not a lone wolf like me.

That said PLEASE WORK WITH ME! I DO MUSIC AND PROGRAM

I think its an "ongoing age" thematic mostly but to start earlier with the competitions and end them before 2 o clock in the night might be a good way. Probably using the last day ( sunday for showing 2 more competitions ) and move the price giving and voting after noon might help to win some time whilst respecting the need to close the doors not to late ?

What could be done

  • less concerts
  • using friday early evening to start the first competitions.
  • using the sunday for showing 1 to 2 competitions ( main compos should still stay for saturday )
  • stopping the loudness after 2 o clock in the midnight.
  • less competitions to gain some free time probably

A general Pre-Select feels somehow wrong as the people invest mostly much time in their productions, but that are only my 5 cents. I´m old, maybe younger sceners see this different.
I think by this time we just need a sticky link at the top of the pouet BBS to all the posts from actual organizers explaining that all of these timetable change suggestions have been considered before and isn't going to work for one reason or another. Seriously, just re-read the first few pages of the Revision 2025 thread (and follow the links to the Revision 2024 thread for even more explanations) to see all of these arguments already being discussed.
We discussed many of those things for quite some years now and the only options we seem to have are:

a) cut down on compos
b) HARSH preselection of entries
c) put deadlines before the party so we can prepare a lot of things beforehand

We do not like any of those options, although c) seems to be the most reasonable but that would also mean that deadlines will be over when people arrive at the party, which also means that people will have to have a ticket bought at that time already. Something not everybody will be able to do / comfortable with doing.

We will be disussion this again before a potential Revision 2026 (this is NOT a confirmation of 2026 btw :)) and see if we can come up with a solution that does not antagonize anyone.

Soon:

"Oldskool" = demo parties as we know them today
"Midskool" = silent disco in between compos at modest volume
"High end" = sceners attending via holo-avatar that'd go autopilot at around 2 a.m.

Again, as an 18 year old, Revision was PERFECT!! I don't see why we should ruin it when you guys can just go to like @party:), Demosplash:), or Layerone>:).
+1 for the game compo earlier idea, it just seems smart
Thank you for the Revision!

Was awesome. I still can barely contain myself.

And was wonderful to be more part of it.

Good luck over the cuckoo's nest,

Entry blessings,

<3
