DAWs have superior sound quality? I doubt VST(i)s sound very different outside of DAWs. As far as I know, the only thing the application actually does is mix channels, and that's an ADD per channel, non? So given a sensible interpolation mode for samplers... how could your application really affect anything?

xeche: I meant compared to vanilla trackers that are sample-based only.

i mean okay yeah, if you want to nitpick then yes as long as the tracker can output the same audio format, the actual byte-level sound quality can stay the same; my point was about how realtime synthesis + effects can give you high quality effortlessly whereas with a tracker you probably need to fiddle with your samples constantly, i.e. EQing out the bass from an instrument in a DAW is two clicks whereas in a "standard" tracker like milky you have to load the sample into an external editor and put a VST on it, then load it back up into the tracker - but then, as i said most currently-still-developed trackers can integrate VST / VSTi plugins so on that end it really doesn't matter anymore.

I started dabling with computer music using amiga trackers like a lot of you, but as good as Renoise is i'm not sure i'd recommend it to start out with unless you've used a tracker before. Gargajs point about being able to study any track in a tracker is a very good one though, so maybe you should look into it anyway.

As a beginners DAW Fruity Loops is indeed very easy to get started with, i'd recommend Reaper too, but I suppose use whatever you feel comfortable with in the end.

Trying to do something, anything, is infinitely better than reading Pouet.

Yes. This.

@gargaj Well, yes, if you use shit samples and don't have good effects, then it will sound shit. On that we can agree. I also assumed that the tracker in question had basic things like EQ / compressor / filters / etc. I guess I was essentially talking about Renoise, which is the only tracker you should ever use anyway. ;)

Yup, just get Renoise and learn the shortcuts. Download a lot of .xrns and study them.

I thought we were talking about techno, not psytrance.. ;)
added on the 2014-02-07 08:34:58 by leGend leGend
It´s all subGenres anyway, be it (Psy-)Trance, Goa, Acid, (Happy)Hardcore, etc. or even DubStep...just to name the most prominents...it´s all music made with Electric Devices, not played live, as in E-Guitar (where the E is just for electical-amplified).
My Dad hated all of this Techno-Music, having been a Singer in a Rockband for Decades! ;) He always said: "That technoid stuff sucks, real music is different!" and he was right!
I am listening to both nowadays in equal amounts, tho! ;) I guess it´s even more Techno than Rock, as you can easily count all computer-music (c64/Amiga/etc.) as Techno aswell! :)
xeche: If Renoise is "the only tracker you should ever use anyway", how come Revision doesn't allow it in the tracked music compo? ;)

sure, there was a time where such music was called Techno and it all sounded the same for some time, if talking about techno you CAN, but mustn´t refer to a specific style, but that was a style used only 2-3 years. And meanwhile there´ve been other TechnoStyles not that known already for years. Acid was way before the big wave f.e....people referred to it as "Independent" in Germany, while there was a lot of "indy"-stuff around, lots even still with guitars, just the rest electronic-made.
I for myself never got the difference between Rave and Techno...to me this is still just a misleading of terms...Rave-Music never existed, what it refers to is Techno-Music (this time the style is meant) and some people just didnt get that Raves where the partys where you could listen to Techno!
Don´t let me get started about Tekno, Tekkno and Tekkkno, or even Schranz vs. HardCore.
Jean Michel Jarre was way before them all, Kraftwerk aswell! Did anyone name it Techno back then? i dont sync so! JMJ was named "SynthPop" (also Depeche Mode etc.) and Kraftwerk was even worse, they named it "New German Wave" here in stupid Germany! ;)
Gargaj:
easily because "Tracked" means tracked as in "use your built-in Effects, no VST(i)" ;) You know that and still ask as if you wouldn´t! :p
I´m with Xeche: nowadays if you want to get started tracking you should use Renoise! If you are about learing how to use a tracker without VST(i)s you can choose whatever you want for sure! ;) Madtracker rocks! Heard ImpulseTracker rocks even more but is pretty incompatible and hard to master or even learn.
Techno = Carl Craig, Derrick May and Juan Atkins. I believe it was Carl Craig who coined the term on one of his early records. Techno comes from Detroit and is essentially music of black origin. Which is why I am confused by the MOBO (Music of Black Origin) awards never covers it!!

Don't get me started on 2Unlimted! Single handley screwed the term for the public meaning with "No Limit!"

Anything else since is a derivative of Detroit Techno, which in itself is a derivative of House and Disco.

what djh0ffman said.
techno was just basically answer from detroit to chicago house.
in the beginning it was just electro and electro mixed with house :)

and btw juan atkins coined term techno.
what djh0ffman said.

aside from the detroit history, techno evolved quite a bit in the UK, the Netherlands and in Germany. i find this whole techno development from ~1980 to the mid 90s absolutely fascinating because it exploded into a multitude of directions and subgenres within a very short timespan - like an avalanche.

there are actually good documentaries about the history of techno around on youtube.
