DGC Party 1996?

category: parties [glöplog]
In the classroom I stayed we totally lifted groceries in a small basket with ropes up to the classroom on the 1st floor... or was it 2nd.

I remember a guy having a HUGE monitor (maybe small by todays standard), but we were all confused that he ran in in 640x480.

I remember getting very high position at some gfx combo for Carlsberg being promised a few thousand kroner in prize, ending up getting 3-5 x 30 beers instead. Yes I was sad.

There was also this quite impressive amount of rain comming one day. I hear a guy just saw rain coming in the window opening, he shut off his computer, and let it dry the next 2 days. I think we heard he got it up and running again on the last day or something.

There might have been a big sausage hanging from the ceiling in one of the toilets. No wait.. there deferentially was hanging a sausage from the ceiling.

I remember a chiptune version of Aha take on me playing on loop from one of the classrooms.

So many fun memories from this party.

FlyveHest, if you get your tapes digitized, we'll be happy to put the footage on scene.org.

Yeah, we had a serious storm one of the first days. Rain coming into the classrooms through the CLOSED windows and flooding the tables next to the wall. I also think Laika was arriving by bike a that time with a quite soaked A1200. And I remember when driving home after that, something like a third of the trees on of the big boulevards had fallen, still partly blocking the road.

We brought these 500w+ speakers for our room for making noise all our the venue (playing music from the Baah! cd etc). I remember once when coming back to the party, and happened to be walking behind the main organizer up to our room - looked like he (again) was going to complain about the music that could be heard on all floors... just to find 2 guys sleeping in there ;)

This party is probably my favourite party of all times - it was the birthplace of the legendary Gaamsekit! :-)

This party for me, stands as a rite of passage, a transition from geeky friends having fun together, into a true and lasting kinship.

.....Another thing I remember fondly, is how hot a BBQ grill can get, when there's a storm blowing on it....the bread was going from pale white to charcoal in something like 10 seconds or so...You had to have Superman reflexes to be able to BBQ without burning stuff :-).

Dipswitch, they already are in DV format, but it is very raw footage, I think that it might be a good idea to edit them a bit before submitting :)

But man, the memories of this party, it is without a doubt the funnest party i've ever been to, mostly because the "fight" against the organazis bred a very underground, freedom-fighting vibe between all the participants.

One of the funnest thing I remember was that national danish television (DR) was out there, producing a short segment for the evening news, and they just kind of moved around with their cameras and filmed.

A guy in the classroom we were located in (no names mentioned ;) were looking at, shall we say, adult content, and got to a particularly nasty pic, prompting him to shout at the top of his lungs, "GAAANGBAAAANG!", then he turned around, and the cameraman was RIGHT behind him, filming it all.

Following that episode was some heavy diplomacy, getting him to promise to not use that footage ;)

Hahaha, those are some awesome stories! I, too, had a blast, and on several occasions, joined forces with participants in assisting them smuggle stuff into the party place during the shifts I had in the door.

And the battle wasn't only between organizers and guests, it was just as much within the organizing crew as well. The three of us who "invented" the one-week-concept DEMOparty, really struggled to try and reduce the vast amount of insanity DGC managed to introduce in every single decission.

And I too remember the storm all too well too. As people already mentioned, water suddenly started pouring in through windows around the center of the main hall. Me and two other organizers quickly decided we had to do whatever we could to save people's computers from getting soaked. So armed with three rolls of duct tape, we entered the roof and started isolating window frames. The next thing I remember was this insanely loud (and strangely enough, very high-pitched!) "explosion" and night turning into day for a brief moment. A quarter of the soaking wet roof litterally lit up from a lightning strike only some 40-50 meters from where we were standing. It's possibly the time I've been most scared in my life, and it felt as if the three of us managed to return to the trapdoor and back into safety in less than a second. I simply don't understand how we dodged being electricuted, being that close to the impact while standing on the same soaking wet roof as the lightning just struck. But it seem to crawl towards the opposite side of the roof and down to the ground on the side of the building.

I genuinely think, that the single most important factor for this party to have made such an impression on the guests, were the duration. Having a full week where you could both work on prods as well as have plenty of time to chat with other guests and booze, get hung over and booze again, really made a huge difference. Breakpoint/Revision, having those extra two days, actually has some of the same feeling, and perhaps I'm not entirely right about people not being willing to spend one week of vacation on a demoparty. Ofcourse, most of us were in school, and had sommer holiday back then, but it might just be, that people would still enjoy a party that lasts for so many days. It also means, that people actually have time to explore the city and perhaps even plan for some non-scene tourism around the town.

Hmm .. if it wasn't such an enourmous financial risk as well as time consuming planning, I'd definitely do it again some day! Only without DGC, which might spoil some of the cowboys/indians feeling for guests :)

I'd like to thank Ramses/Remedy, ex-sysop of Uphold the Law BBS, because without him giving me his Amiga conf backups, to find stuff like this on them, we wouldn't have this awesome stream of recollections! =)

Glad I could help :-D
Ah, yes, TCP was awesome!

We (Efreet) were sitting in a classroom together with Puzzle and Gunnars Farvebio (among others). One of the days during the party, we (MZ1453 (from Gunnars Farvebio), Lemmus and myself) had our own little internal competition: write the best game in AMOS with the restriction that the source code should fit on a single screen. I made a Breakout clone (including a simple level-editor); MZ1453 made an ascii-graphics racing game; I fail to recall what Lemmus made.

During the party a 4k intro compo was annouced. We spent a few days (the party was a whole week, remember) to make Splat II from scratch: Lemmus made the music player and samples, Existence made the music, and I made the visuals. We ended up competing against GFB's Wait - two colorful, infinitely looping intros, both with quite good music for their time.

And then there was the Sponsor compo: Betafon (the main retailer of Amigas in Copenhagen at the time) wanted a demo to run in their shop. They sponsored an Amiga 1200 to the winner of the compo. The only requirement was that it should contain a Betafon logo. The compo was merged with the regular demo compo such that the highest ranking demo containing a Betafon logo would win the Amiga. That ended up being BeBetotefofu?, which was a demo made specifically to mock to whole sponsor concept. At the prizegiving, we ignored the logo rule and swapped the prizes around so that iRIS got the Amiga for their winning demo. Another one of the many "we know better than the organizers" incidents. :)

Oh! I accidently dug up some old Fidonet-logs that seem to contain at least some of the results from the party. The graphics and music competitions are still missing, though.

The fact that I could probably put names and faces to most of the people who did most of the stuff in a democompo in 1997 suddenly makes me feel very old :)

But but,you ARE old! The thing I remember best from that party was Bifrost/Iris shouting "BUUH" many time and very loud, when that organizer 'won' the fancy computer.
