"Go to Pouet, but not to the BBS"
category: offtopic [glöplog]
(I did not see the messages of elend and groepaz, I totally agree with them)
There are long-time sceners who don't want to hang around on Pouet because there's just too much negativity in what people write, "scene police" mentality and besserwissers, you know what I mean. But so what? Should this be everything for everyone.
and that has been no different back in the days, there is not one place for everyone. trying to please all just results in mediocre BS.

that i'll be fine with. as it is, it's what gasman says - a waste of the scrummasters time.

What gasman said.
Once had access, looked at the code, fiddled a bit aaaaand gave up. Life went on.
Does that mean the code is ugly and unusable? What tf happened when you started to write it from scratch??!
The rewrite from scratch is the 2.0 version i assume. The ugly, unusable is probably what you're using right now :)
...but it's good to aknowledge that it _is_ possible to steer the development and dynamics of an on-line community. The website software's "features" can be a part in that steering, but then there are things like rules and guidelines, moderation staff activity, and even graphics and colors.

The Pouet codebase was ( is? ) crazy spaghetti PHP. I remember trying to fix a couple of really simple things and seeing that I had to do this in 3, 4, ... different places.

k. :D

I still don't approved the use of the acronym "BBS" when referring to a web-based discussion board.
yes!
sometimes it's better to build up a new house instead of renovate it...

if you really want to get into the scene
But they don't know that yet. Don't you see the huge logical flaw in your argument? If people come to learn about the scene, that is something completely different from already having chosen to engage its the community. This argument, and just going around insisting that "Pouet is not the scene" is just not thinking about the actual problem -- where to send people.
Demozoo will be one place, and a new Scene.org will be another. This is a hobby for us all, so things take time. In the case of "OMG JUST OPEN SOURCE IT ALREADY!" -- this makes me smile, then cringe, because it is such a non-thought-through thing to say.

My opinion:
Keep Pouet, because people DO keep coming here, and maybe try to moderate on folks being jerks more. And shine up Scene.org (I'm not so sure about Demozoo yet, but am happy to be surprised).
Because the environment here *can* be welcoming and non-residue, and if it isn't, it won't be any different from the environment on IRC or at a party or any other platform. Community is not about shiny new codebases any more than it is about shiny new buildings; it is about people. That's why we keep coming to this place, and why we keep going to IRC.
I will say that SceneSat has done a lot on the codebase *and* community end of things, so that can be an exemplar or something.
I can say that Sacha started up a FB group for Panamerican demosceners (I AM NOT HAVING THAT ARGUMENT RIGHT NOW, kthanks) and it is turning into a #trax reunion and has been 100% positive awesome thus far. I would never have expected that from FB.
It isn't the platform, it is the people. This is true of demos, and this is true of communities.
No, it isn't the newest modern shiniest thing. Yeah, attitudes could use a shift. This could be said of some things about the scene overall.
Yeah, longterm it would be good to have a more maintainable codebase, but in case nobody noticed, there are a bunch of people with access to the Pouet spaghetti, so if you want it done, maybe have a slogparty to slog through the code, or even to start developing a strategy to deal with it. The way forward is not about blaming people. Hell, I'd help organize such a thing, even if I'd be more harmful than helpful unleashed on the codebase myself.
I bet a lot of the 60hrwk jobs that drain oldschool sceners' energy for making prods are in database coding . . .
:D
Cmon folks, we can handle this.

uuuhm... new sceners? where?
overhauling a community site for ~1k active users for ~3 newcomers a year is probably even more retarded than fixing 10yo spaghetti-code :P
Well, there sure have been a lot of new sceners at each @party . . . (e.g. among the people who came this year, I didn't know a good 20% of them).
And I'm sure as heck not the only one doing outreach.

I dont like seeing things move to faceook (in this particular case I dont care too much, tho).
on the one hand thats of course purely selfish because i refuse to have an account there and dont want to miss out.
on the other hand there are plenty of good and valid reasons not to be on facebook but by shifting important communication there people are having the choice of selling their soul to zuckerberg or being isolated.
FB is already so big that it is easy to gather a lot of people from almost every scene/community.
Thats why it is so important to have places like Pouet. If it was all fragmented over dozens of sites with no central place to check for demoscene related stuff people would be driven to use FB even more because its a lot easier than browsing 10 sites for demonews.
oh and sorry for bringing that argument up nevertheless ;)
I'm quoting myself here (January 2012)

There's a lot of talk about "we should", "one might", "why not do this" etc. So - if anyone is interested to build a demoscene portal from scratch (with integration/migration of all the good stuff we have so far), contact me and we can start working on a broader concept. Call it Pouet 2.0 or whatever - I'm all up for it.

Proposal:
Let's organize a party, like a barnraising, that is centered around fixing Pouet.
Let's organize a party, like a barnraising, that is centered around fixing Pouet.
D.Fox: I'm in.
And I said that proposal being willing to help organise it, btw. So yeah, for only being able to do project management, I'm in.
metoikos: fixing pouet isn't going to cut it
a barnraising weekend to open up the new pouet wip to get people implementing whats missing and code revising whats done. discussing and polishing up the roadmap. sounds good. ofcourse that would imply having access to the wood. which brings us back to the point at hand.
