Scali - yeah, i know about virtual pc, actually vmware is one of the main apps i use. but running some of the stuff i need under emulation would really not be nice... would you want to run some nice mac video editing software or something on a mac emulator on pc (if there was one)?
What would be nice is having space for a pc and a mac in my corner of our small office room at home :) I could always go for a mac laptop i suppose, which is what i had to do for an old dos pc machine.

Fact is however that even AMD themselves claim that the Opteron is a server/workstation processor.
Which is the main reason why you can't get any desktop x86-64 boxes yet, and you have to wait for Athlon64... But if you want to call them desktop CPUs, fine. Just don't expect anyone else to agree with you.

Well, same goes here, IBM claims that the PPC970 is a desktop CPU, and its price and specs support that. They also make workstations and servers with its server-cousin, the POWER4(+). Again, don't expect anyone else to agree with you.

Yea, you can 'possibly' disconnect your one-button mouse, and use a multi-button one. If you want to remove your onboard audio, you get a 'no'.
You missed my point though, which was that the hardware is 'off-the-rack', meaning that it may not be exactly how you want it, but it's no big deal. Onboard audio is really cheap, and can be disabled. Same goes for a one-button mouse.

I'm not much of a fan of MacOS (although I haven't tried OSX yet...), but I sincerely hope the G5 gives them a much needed boost in users.
I agree, these machines look like they're built for pushing media around. That's some nasty bus bandwidth they've got there... and it's on a crossbar switch too just like a SGI box.
I used to hate Macs with a passion, but I bought a iBook after playing with a friends' because OS X is great. There should be more demos out there for OS X. OpenGL is standard (hell, the whole GUI is drawn with it), FMOD is available, they ship with a full development environment too.
I'm thinking I might get a G5 instead of a new PC. I'm sick of fucking with PC hardware and Windows. I just want the bloody computer to work, and Macs just do it. Plug in a camera, up pops iPhoto. Plug in a camcorder and start editing. You can even get MS Office.
