Breakpoint 2009 - Everything is under control

category: parties [glöplog]
Preacher: Right.

And personally, I find those who state "oh noes, they are turning Breakpoint into something political" extremely silly. Even if you right now are investing all your money into the stock market, and think that humanity should be enslaved: That doesn't stop you from enjoying Breakpoint.

dodge: I suggest simply ignoring Stefan instead.

it's this stupid argument (stock market/enslavery) that many of us discuss. for breakpoint concerned i couldn't care any less. a theme is a theme. you could have a nazitheme or bukkaketheme but it would still be breakpoint.

Gargaj: Obviously everyone will get a chip implanted into their brain during the opening ceremony, and be converted into food to be enjoyed by yours personally at the prizegiving :)

No, really, I know the invitation has been rather dark: The point of the party is to have a fucking great time and do what we ever did no matter how fucked up things in the non-scene-world turn out to be, and this will positively reflect on what's planned in regards of party action...

Wow. My spontaneous feeling is: I don't like the "Everything is under control" theme one bit.

"Digital Garden" was such a pleasant theme, as were the themes before that.

The drawing is especially revolting.

Hmm.

On the other hand, the slogan raises the question: "Under who's control?"

Ah well.

I'm beginning to see the funny side in it.

Still... that big-brother robot is giving me chills. What an unfriendly piece of hardware.

And although you can't really see it in the picture, the policeman is wearing super-sc-ifi goggles, too. How awesome is that.

vibrator:

I'll give you my current view on this:

Under the control of the small minority that owns the majority of the wealth, and does not wish to be disturbed by riots.

In pretty much all of the western world during the last 10 years the income of the 10% richest part of the society has seen dramatic increases. The middle class has stagnated, the lower incomes have dropped. National debt is a way of transferring more money to the rich (because the money is borrowed by the state from the rich, and we all pay the interest rate), war on oil has been a way to transfer to the rich, hedge funds and globalizations - all had the same goal: A small chunk of people gets richer and more powerful. To achieve this, they use lobbyism and all sorts of fear to get politicians under their control. And the politicians again then try to bring their nations under control.

And if you look at the economical crisis right now, with all its side effects and all the harm it does - the money isn't vaporizing. It's again going to the rich. It's just a matter than that small group finally has lost the last sense of decency. It doesn't matter to them anymore what it means to the world, if values including social ones that got built up in decades now gets destroyed in no-time. They profit from it, so it's OK to them.

Or to put it in simple terms: This isn't some weird conspiracy. It's just that during the last decade due to things evolved a small group of greedy assholes got all the power into their hands they wanted, and they are now using it for their advantage. Pretty basic human nature really.

And where is the fun part in this? I doubt it will work out in the long run. In the accelerated process of transfer wealth to the rich things are getting out of control, and now their own wealth starts to collapse, too. It doesn't help much if you've gather a few billions of US dollars if you are yourself killing that currency, it doesn't help if most things you own are losing their value. The current phase is funny enough already: The rich guys are crying "we destroyed some of our wealth, hey, non-rich-guys, please replace that wealth for us!", and we are still complying. The day we stop doing that will be when the real fun starts. Hopefully their greed will kill themselves, which brings in some irony for the rest of us.

And the reason why we as a scene do not have to be depressed about all that: The scene isn't about money. The values we are after aren't affected by all this.

We are indirectly affected - say, because a important demo party has been struggling due to sponsors being hit by the financial crisis. And in future possibly because some of us live in countries where the currency value is dropping, or because transportation to demopartys abroad becomes too expensive.

But in the end: As we all know the scene is even able to be happy with a 20-year old home computer. The core of what we enjoy is not at all based on wealth. There is no stock market for skill, creativity and fun, so it can't crash. And that's why all this should not depress sceners at all.

So, as expressed in the outline thread already: When it comes to the stuff where the scene depends on economic factors, and that's mostly being able to visit demopartys abroad: It's the right time to enjoy what we have right now. You just visit each and every demoparty you always wanted to go to but didn't right now, as that may get out of reach for yourself in the future. Enjoy what you can right now, and keep in mind that for the future you'll still always have what you love most about the scene, and that this is something no greedy bastard in the world could take away from you.

And it may be cheesy, but I really like this visualization of the situation:

people should just consider the Breakpoint "theme" as a middle finger salute to it all and a statement of the true independent spirit the scene was once founded on. and, yes, above all - enjoy it!

but bare in mind what is "sponsoring" this year's party...YOU and the good old scene spirit. That's somthing to be happy and proud of.
