Thumbs should stay, they're quick and simple, if you want to say more about any other aspect of the demo, write it in the comment that goes with the thumb.

People thumb down popular demos simply because they don't like the experience of watching them. Some people have different standards to others. For instance, I didn't like the Planet Risk by ASD, I thought the graphics were messy (too much water ripple pixel shaders) and I hated the music. I didn't care how technically impressive it was, the end result was not attractive to me so: thumb down.

I'm embarrassed about the vitriol in my comments on that demo now, but I'm not going to apologise about what I said.

I didn't like Zoom 3 either :P

The thumbs are not for "good" or "bad", but for "like" or "dislike". It's a measurement of taste, not of technical excellence or any other "qualitative" attribute (see also: lack of objective standards for how demos should be rated).

Exactly.

I apologize for thinking you are annoying because you opened this shitty topic.
why should one apologize for thumbing down a "top10" product? That sounds sooo much like mainstream media. So if you really can't stand a product, there's no need to apologize for a thumb down.
I don't usually thumb down demos, even the mediocre ones. Especially in the obvious masterpieces, when I find thumbs down I scroll down and try to find them and see what the thumb-downers were really thinking. I'd say "Who the fuck would thumb down such a demo?". Usually it's a reaction to the massive thumbup, like everyone should like this demo. Subjectively it could be a piggie because it's not someone's taste but it doesn't mean it's bad. Thumbing down is showing off that I don't like that damn thing. It's the psychology of pouet users at stake here :)

There must be a time or two I have thumbed down some good demo. It wasn't the obvious awesome masterpiece that has great gfx, effects and music and everything and you wonder who would have thumbed down this. It was te-2rb, too minimalistic for my taste at the time. I will repent by thumbing up it's win32 port :P

i guess analogue didn't set the thumb system as a reference to nazism (!) but to the popular legend that in roman empire decandence era the salute of beaten gladiators was supposedly determined by the thumb of the organizer or governor (usually according to the thumbs or hurrahs of the public).

anyway, pouet thumb system is cruel and unfair but it's simple and share the same democratic spirit than the voting system in most demoparties.

the demoscene should be a democracy (with all its drawbacks) , not an aristocracy ( = leetocracy).

How on earth can the demoscene be a democracy? It's more like complete anarchy with a bit of respect thrown in for those who make great demos.

I personally put my thumb down if I don't like the prod at the moment when I rate it (almost always right after checking out the prod). The prod maybe total crap technically or even ground breaking in some way, it really doesn't matter. I just watched Panic Room again and still I'd give it a thumb down simply, because I don't like... and yes I know it's technically massive etc. I don't care, I won't apologize. None should, if they aren't just name voting stuff down. On the other hand name voting stuff up is even more ridiculous...

My voting is usually affected by my mood. I might thumb up more or less good production according to the mood while watching.

I can't believe people actually do that. If you thumb things down just because everyone else is thumbing them up you may as well not bother to watch the demo at all.

It would actually be a nice feature for pouet.net, being able to change the vote. I voted down some more experimental stuff down in 2001/2002.. I wish I could change it now :)

Cool! \ 0 /
question is, will it affect the current situation? as in, will there be a mass-revote? (e.g. of a certain diskmag)
added on the 2008-12-22 17:23:27 by Gargaj Gargaj
depends on how much time people have got to waste

Gargaj, if you do that changing vote option, try to think something to make clear the vote was updated, else the comments and the updated votes will be very confusing... You know, maybe a grayscale thumb for the original vote and a color one to the right.

Would be a very bad idea imo and yet another toy for trolls... Pouet has real issues to fix, it would be better to focus on those instead ;)
