What about danny devito?
If anyone looks like the game character, that's Johnny Knoxville... not saying he'd be the best (or more believable) actor for the movie, but he does indeed look a lot like the game character:

seriously guys, the dark/snowy/urban/dirty/surreal/noir trademarks of max payne franchise is well rendered in the movie, you can't deny it, or then at least aknowledge that it could have been way worse, the list of successful movies based on videogames is so tiny...
though i must admit i'd enjoyed DooM the movie so my opinion may be questionable :p

okkie: oh yeah, the original twisted game designer should have played the main role, too bad hollywood needed a bankable star :(
about the original painful/constipated max payne face, it did bring a special touch to the original game, the new face in max payne 2 was too generic, more similar to a clive owen in shoot'em up...
i'm sure he would've worked great with a thick finnish accent :)
At least in the picture Jcl posted Marky Mark looks close enough to Max Payne, similar nose and chin even.. Makes me suspect all the bitching about the casting is something against the his past/persona instead of his looks.
What's his story anyway? Checked out some of his tunes on youtube and damn... dude is fucking garbage. Couldn't rap to save his life and the beats suck ass. How could this crap be popular at a time when many of the "big names" of rap were making their best work.. Dr Dre starting that whole G-funk thing and then that Native Tongues thing in NY, in fact I could probably go on for ages listing much better stuff from the time... Maybe prepubescent girls thought he was hot and bought his cassettes so they could look at the cover who knows.
As an actor he's not that bad. Did a good job in Boogie Nights...

Personally, I think Hyde could have pulled it off if only he scowled a bit more. :)
un drôle d\'état: Mark's brother was one of the "New Kids On The Block"... he just wanted to be like him, so it looks :)

Two words: Vanilla Ice.
There are only two good things about Marky-Mark: Three Kings and Entourage. :)
btw, have you ever thought about how difficult it is for scriptwriters to adapt a videogame into a movie ? videogames are based on gameplay first not rich stories, except some specific genres like adventure ; movies have to bring outer excitment that videogames provide first with the user interaction/immersion.
the max payne movie does not bad by mixing both story elements from max payne 1 & 2, and graphically it is very faithful to them.
people seem to be disappointed because of the few epic gunfights, but you wouldn't want a movie to become too videogamish even if it's based on a videogame, would you ? or else you want shoot'em up :) silly and crazy. Max Payne the movie had to be serious.

Zest: You're right about the videogame --> movie script problems (which is indeed why most movies based on a video game suck ass), but when it comes to Max Payne I actually had high hopes. The original story (and the way it is presented in the game(s)) is pretty darn good.
Postal is p. much awesome as hell!
personally i even preferred max payne 2 story-wise, it looked like a disturbing trip into a mentally sinking man universe.
Damn, I want to play Max Payne now.. :)
you cant, mark wahlberg does
zest: are you on valkyr yourself?!??
Gargaj: *zing* :)
When I first heard there was going to be a Max Payne movie, I immediately thought David Boreanaz (plays the name role in Angel) should play Max. Dunno if it's the vampire face vs. Max Payne's squint or just the overall resemblance of the characters but I still don't think he would have been a bad choice.
Max pulls some weird faces in the comic cutscenes:
