who careZ.? no1s able to do "classic musiC" in perfection nowadays.......damn,why did i even click into this topic.? may he rot where most of the maggots get a catch.! long live beethoven and Tchaikovsky...Rust in Pieces,Pavarotti.! he didnt give the music anything new at all.! ;)
Damn you, he performed with Céline Dion. That's a lot !
Cocoon: oh and more seriously, I hope you're just kidding in your statement.
Saying that Pavarotti brought nothing to the music (because he hasn't composed anything) would be like saying that Arthur Rubinstein brought nothing to the romantic piano, and especially Chopin.
Through his playing, Rubinstein has shown to the world that Chopin was the greatest piano composer ever. Before Rubinstein, it was considered as minor piano music...
Same for Gould with Bach, etc...
And I think it's the same for Pavarotti who has influenced a lot of artists and made of the opera a far more popular genre. Something less elitist culture-wise.
Well, a seat in L'Opéra de Paris is sometimes amazingly expensive (last time I checked it was 140 euros!!!) but... well, we know that opera exists at least ! ;)

You've got to be kidding. Gould is fucking awful to listen to. All one hears is "Hummmmm... Hummmmmm... Hummmmmmm..." I simply can't stand it. An overrated artsy-fartsy fruitcake, if there ever was one.

thom, what do you think ad hominem arguments tell about Gould?
Zest, if I may, http://youtube.com/watch?v=X2EQmQUXXIc
he's not dead

off topic, we're not talking elvis ;)
oxb: Come to Finland. Thanks to government subsidies opera tickets can be bought for as low as 14 euros!
Nice! Here opera tickets are usually very expensive :O
Talking about Bach and fugues... listen to this: http://www.oncproducoes.com/musicos/laginha/cancoes_fugas.html

Always tragic to see someone die, but I had no respect for him personally
And why not,Shane?
The most beautiful voice on planet Earth with Sinatra's one,for me.
And a good and generous man.
come on guys, classical music is great but opera!? it's beyond boring (and expensive).
I'd like to see the scale equivalent of an opera as a demo, you know.
IMO the mainly tedious stuffs about opera are:
1. Usually difficult word understanding of what is singed
2. Point of view in the teathre: I think it's crucial, really.

Odyssey comes to my mind first, IF a demo should get an opera version.. ;)
