If you're doing software rendering, then just find specs for a top-of-the-line system circa 1999, and go with that.

Fusion. P4 3.2ghz Prescott, 1G DDR/Dual channel RAM, 6600GT video, 160G drive, Santa Cruz sound card. Seriously built for endurance. Runs 36c idle, 46c under extended load. Thermalright XP-90 sink on the cpu w/panaflo L1B. NMB fans everywhere else. Note the intelligent fan controller on the corner of the rear fan. Very fast, very stable.
