i started at 1.52 (like most eu psps?), upgraded to 2.0 and then down.
one thing that i can note is that i didn't get that warning screen mentioned in some howto(daily hacks i think) and that my psp was just a few days old without much settings being done (no settings was done while it was at 2.0).
i guess you can still run games and upgrade alteast?
it worked for me, but people DO warn about bricking them.

ok, thanks to Gargaj links are now updated
I can run almost well Suicide Barbie (with annoying pauses between parts and half channel of sound missing), and also some other scene stuff with PPSSPP. I have never managed to unlock my original PSP in the past though.
