dosbox 0.62 released

category: offtopic [glöplog]
DosBox is great!

Well,. yes. Most people want to run H-Plus or Orange demos. It might not run well some modern demos with good speed or without sound clattering, but wth? There are a lot of older clasic demos that I was too happy to run smooth and nice today..

Not just the very old classics, where normal core with 16000 are more than enough. With dynamic core, I could even reach from around 32000 to 64000 cycles without sound problems, depending on the demo parts running (sometimes I have to play with the cycles with the shortcuts. It varies on the demopart).

But I could reach such an ammount of cycles for some of the demos that require a good 486 or early Pentium! Secret Life of Mr.Black, Spirit, Vivid experiment, Juice, Headache were some of them that ran smooth after playing with the cycles number.

I also tried some games. Dynamic, 32000, Doom runs very smooth in window without problems. Duke3d is slow :P. Dune2 was perfect with only 16000 cycles. That's great for a lot of old PC games.

I am very sattisfied and it's still at 0.62 version. Time is close where I totally won't need to plug my old 486/Pentium1. I won't need a GUS soundcard too. Hurray!!! =)

I just popped in my old Xwing floppies, played the some missions up to the point where I got worried about me pressing the right keys even though I haven't touched the game in nearly a decade.

Aside being glad I can still kick ass in a busted Y-Wing, I'm also happy to report FT2.08 runs like Raymond K. Hessel -provided you use SB16 instead of GUS :\

Sadly, this funky shit didn't work anymore :((

i didn't seem to be very successfull with it yet. ft2 behaves as if i would run it on an old 286 with the turbo-button beeing disabled .. i think i configured dosbox to the max now, resulting in ft2 playing 4-channel mods somewhat crippled :/

Well, yes.. not everything is running perfect. Some heavy demos run surprisingly well with lots of cycles (Secret life of mr.black, most times sound doesn't clutter with even 64000 cycles, 32000 are enough for the demo), while others will have problems with even less cycles (I don't remember which ones, zbs Verses will clutter the sound at some times, except if it's running at around 16000 dynamic, but it's more than enough for this demo. Also,. Civilization is slow (sound and everything) no matter with how many cycles (bug?), but I could run Doom smooth enough..)

I also want to run Legend by Impact Studios. It still won't go on after the first picture ;P

ie, i saw the x-wing demo in, dear lord, early 1993 was it?, and from what i vaguely remember it wasn't playable, just cutscenes.

nah, for gloom i'd recommend ebay. seems to be an easy find for under 10 bucks. it seems lucasarts has been cracking down on the abandonware sites.

Yes, hence the smiley. But the TIE Fighter demo is playable.

Should I mention that I have the collector's CD? No, probably not... ^_^

Meh, I got the Korean Collector's CD of TIE-Fighter. Beat that :)

However, if yours is this collector's pack, I'm beaten. In that case, I'd like to know where you live and what window isn't fully secured.

Has anyone tried or had any success with Bochs in lieu of DOSbox?

radman: i did in a boring rainy afternoon, but then i just got bored of the disk-image system (it didn't have direct access to the hardware back then, and probably doesn't have it now either) and i couldn't get any decent audio. Vesa support was also out of question, iirc.

DosBox emulates gus and vesa card, is ultralightweight and multiplatform. I think it's a nice piece of software :D

phoenix: i actually own a serial, the discs just happen to be fucked :)

yeah, i lost my copy on a bad backup tape.. argh, what was i thinking with those things?

as for bochs, when it comes to demos i wouldn't bother with it.
