The canonical advice (which some people have alluded to) is: If you want to experience the demoscene, go to a demoparty. There are several taking place over the summer, all over Europe.
You don't have to bring a release to attend. You can just go there and enjoy the compos, hang out and meet people. Though it goes almost without saying that there is a special thrill about experiencing your stuff played live to a demoparty audience.
