The state of the demoscene: 1991 - 2011
category: general [glöplog]
wait, so in 2012 all teenagers prefer to game and in the nineties some teenagers prefer to code?
i once joined the scene on my own accord, you know. and not because the games were "too ugly".

I think it might be hard to nail it down to just a simple set of circumstances, but Rasmus raises a very good point about the different platforms to showcase yourself and your work -- back in the day there were very few, now the cup runneth over.
Yeah, there's a whole ton of reasons. Pick your favourite and go make a demo about it :)
That's the thing: I don't want to pick one, I want to discover them all. :) Only through understanding can one hope to achieve lasting change... blah blah blah etc. :)
By the time you understood it all, it will be too late to change anything ;)
d.fox: initiating change without knowing what to change is almost as bad as inaction, IMO :)
True :)
i really hope this thread ends up in yet another "the scene is dead" demo ;)
I can provide an XML dump of it.
skrebbel, please remember that i stated it was "my subjective truth"
Gloom: knowing what's wrong is definitely good, but it might not lead to a simple solution.
The other approach is to figure out what the scene needs to be like in the next decade or so if it's to get back to vibrant and growing, then work back to what we need to do to make it happen.
(I think both approaches are equally important btw, and should inform each other :)

Just tell me guys, is it still ok to come to demoparties just to watch demos and have (many) beers with friends?
no, but play a few rounds of team fortress 2 and you're fine
that's what i'll do
that's what i'll do
psonice: figuring out what the scene needs to be is the result of knowing what caused its decline + new goals. :)
as long as you drink beer - you can do whatever you like!
i have a lot of respect for tg and assembly for what they're doing.
e.g. ive seen tg's creative area and it totally works. they get creative people using computers, people making indie games etc and put them all together. people start doing pictures, music or anims for the compos and then come back the next year with a demo.
people who diss those parties for not being "hardcore scene" enough should get over themselves. :)

Word! Let's embrace creativity on computers instead of scoffing at what others do.
It's not that sceners can't embrace an interactive picture frame, but when's anyone gonna embrace Numb Res on the same level?
Love to raise the topic about certain parties not being hardcore scene. But to be treated like a 12 year old by hired securitas guards and not being allowed to have a beer while geeking with friends is what separates us from them. Right?
gargaj: when somebody hangs it in a gallery and presents it as art? That's probably all it takes.
Yeah, that's like a dumb thing to say. If they wanted exposure for Numb Res like that it really wouldn't be hard.
If you would have said 'dumb cracktros' i'd be with you. When will people embrace them as ARTS!
that's a matter of a push and pull effect ;)

okkie: and CHIPTUNES! WHEN PEOPLE WILL CALL IT MUSIC?! UH?
