Breakpoint 2007

category: general [glöplog]
1) at inercia two-thousand-something we had 1-day tickets for non-sceners. that rocked, cause we had a lot of demoshows and workshops and people got really interested. of course, we were in the beginning, and that HELPED creating a somewhat scene spirit. yeah, i can imagine it would be different at breakpoint, but let's not generalize.

2) i was once a student, and i remember that coming from far away to demoparties was impossible, the entrance fee plus the cost of the journey would be umbearable. nowadays, i look back and see how things have changed. i can afford to go to multiple demoparties abroad and even have pocket money for beer (and, less important, food). so supporting the demopartyscene - i like this word - became important for me, so even if it's 10 eur or 15 more expensive, that's ok, specially if you think what you get in return.

please, do not forget about people, who are students now, or live in far away places. in russia 15eur=one week of food for living. i rather suggest to make free donations possible with web money or something else. don't know if it help much.

scamp makes a good point against single-day-tickets.. besides, then he'd have to probably hire more security, which means more $.

a logical step would be to raise the price for non-students only, requiring a student id for the discount price. of course, it would be difficult to deal with id's from all sorts of countries, not to mention those that may not even have id's.

elfh: please read my post again. i was a student back then, even a poor one from portugal, when 15 eur could buy food for a week. what i am saying is that NOW i can afford it.

what phoenix is saying makes a lot of sense. make a student ticket - student id's are quite universal, i think, and the story about fake id's, well, only students need to do that, so... :) - and make a cheaper ticket from visitors from far away. something like:

price A: < 300 km
price B: 301 - 600 km
price C: 601 - 900 km
price D: 901 - 1200 km
for free for: australians and argentinians... :)

It's definetly a good idea. You could check thee student proofs *before* the party, then only an id card/passport would be needed during the "check in". You could also say that such people has to wait until the main crowd is in.

how about truck who's from the US but lives in finland?
plus, how about someone who lives far away but the flight ticket is cheaper than for others who live closer?
added on the 2007-02-26 01:55:04 by Gargaj Gargaj
about your first point: yeah well, we would have to TRUST our fellow sceners and believe when they say they come from their country. i'm sure truck would say he comes from finland, even if the US would give him a bigger discount.

about the second: yes, well, if it's more expensive for you to come from hamburg than from lisbon, then you should organize a bus trip. then you bring more sceners, and voilà!

jeenio yeah you know me, but i don't suppose you know every scener :)
What i meant is, obviously it wouldn't be possible for the guys sitting at the entrance to:
1. ask every visitor where he/she comes from
2. check how far away their residence is
This equals half a day to get everyone in.

So everyone would need to calculate it for his/herself beforehand and just ask for the right ticket. And that requires a lot of trust. I would be happy if every scener out there would be that honest, but that just sounds insanely naive.

The solution to this is obvious: In case we really should go with any kinds of discounts, getting these will require a pre-registration. Then the infodesk simply can decide by the list if someone will get the discount. Anything that could lead to discussions or any form of additional checks would result in the "door opening" part of the party lasting far too long.

jeenio: i'm not so sure about distance being a factor in one's budget. thing is, I'M flying from the united states, and i'm paying $600 to do so, so what is an extra 10 or 20 euros to me? it's not like i sold my car and furniture so i could make this trip. :) those without much money will probably be going *because* it will cost them very little to travel (or they'll just ride in someone else's car).

and wait a minute, did stefan just agree with me? :)

Btw, if we should go for "social tickets", I'd prefer not to bind this to something specific like a student ID. People simply should drop us a mail why the regular price would absolutely block them from being able to visit the party.

good point(s).

i have a good idea to solve the entrance delay problem: TWO infodesks! :)

i know, i know, we are only brainstorming in here.

suppose this: we could make a fund, some kind of trust where people could give money away via PayPal or credit card; then, a specialized team would select people from around the world and subsidize plane tickets or bus trips.

or we could use the money of the trust to pay the hall. doesn't matter. the idea of the trust is to keep the entrance fee low(ish) and the people who can afford to give 20 (or more) euros, will do. you are gonna say "that ain't never work" but i'm a living proof that it does work. the return of the epic vehicle during the demoscene summer tour 2005 was almost entirely funded with donations by the epic donors! and it was great!

Scamp,

Just a FYI: ASM computer tickets are 65 euros (2600 seats like these), and 75 euros for grand stand places (around 400 seats in the grand stands that are more expensive to build). So in general a non-oldskool visitor pays 65 euros.

We had the "girls get in free" rule until late 90s. The time for that is just long gone.

IMO pricing Breakpoint at 60 euros is not at all bad. I'm pretty sure that it won't significantly change the amount of people coming as BP is the "only, true nobody-but-sceners party". If you also compensate it with the "social ticket", you are all set. Traveling to Bingen costs helluva lot more than the extra 15 euros that are being talked here. It's just the price of couple of beers...

7,5Euros for a beer in Germany?

Maybe thats why alot of people cant go if the entrance fee is raised? 15 euros is as stated before food for a week for a low-incomer in most EU countries (even in sweden for students).

scamp: Do you receive anything from the city? As a non-profit organization bringing foreign money to Bingen you might be eligible. An online donation system sounds like a good idea too.

At Breakpoint 06 we had about 100 girls present, more than ever before

You know, adding one word to the rules could turn that to your advantage. "Topless girls get in for free". Think about it.
added on the 2007-02-26 08:49:37 by doomdoom doomdoom
Haha, I'm with Doom on this one! :D But it's kinda true, the 'girls get in for free' thing could EASILY become 'girls get in for half-price' and still be fair.

And it doesn't help much I guess, but I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks more for entrance or even pay 2 bucks for a beer instead of 1...

scamp, don't look over preacher's voluntary "even higher price" ticket idea as well, as being sortof the opposite of your proposed social ticket (which i think is a great idea). you could give the people paying the even higher price some extra gadget that doesn't cost anything to make but is something of a nice gadget/souvenir, meaning "look, i supported breakpoint".

that, and maybe consider the VIP ticket that scene event 04 (i think) had - a filthy expensive ticket containing shitloads of extras, free food/drink, a different colour shirt, etc. plek was the only buyer, back then :D

i'm so with okkie and doom on the topless girls get in for free thing.

Seriously: half price tickets for girls, and a 10-15 e increase in ticket prices all over wouldn't kill anyone and i would be perfectly cool with that. (tho it would mean the party tickets would be like 3-5x more expensive than any finnish party.. on the other hand our beer costs way more)

if bingen doesn't support BP already that should be something to look into. I'm sure 1000 sceners for 4 days bring in more money than damages :-)

And no, my employer isn't into sponsoring stuff like this :-(

how about charging 5e per seat to pre-reserve tables in the hall? :)
added on the 2007-02-26 10:03:41 by smash smash
uncle-x, your employer sucks!

half price for girls sounds good.

traveling to bingen and getting drunk there for few days will fuck up my budget anyway, so it doesn't matter to me if the entrance is 15euros higher or not.

VIP ticket sounds like a good idea also, especially if they would allow one to go into some nice area with comfy somfas and food+drinks.

1.) We don't want non-sceners, local or not, at Breakpoint.

Quote:

Besides that, a lot of sceners bring female friends these days, and those girls also have a lot of fun at the party due to the high number of possibilities there - getting drunk at a bonfire, dancing to live music acts and meeting people from all over the world also is fun if you aren't a nerd yourself.

Quote:

The basic problem Breakpoint always had is that the low entrance fee never has been enough to cover the expenses needed per visitor.

Quote:

The girls-get-in-for-free rule is a pretty unrelated subject to our budget problems.

I love living in Sweden where its illegal to have different entrance fees for men and women, so i wont have to face discrimination because of gender or the weird logic of organizers.
added on the 2007-02-26 10:31:47 by hollowman hollowman
hollowman: The logic isn't weird if you don't randomly copy together various quotes.

Sceners that bring with them their non-scene friends to take a glimpse at our community aren't regarded as an issue by myself. Non-scener females fall into this category. Not a contradiction.

That changes to the girls-get-in-for-free-part won't bring in much budget also has been explained in great detail.
