what to do with hates / permanent thumbdowners?

TBH I always kind of felt bad about this. I don't think BITS is the most persistent, organized troll this site has ever seen (as some seem to believe). Something must be actually wrong, and this cannot but invoke feelings of sympathy.

Meanwhile, would anybody tell the story behind that really MASSIVE thumbdowning the BITS prods?

I guess at this point it's become a punching bag thing.

Kind of want to add to the above that I feel the same way. What little I witnessed of his actions, it didn't seem like malice, but more like a mental illness.
I just can't be that angry at guys like that. They really can't do better, and ostracizing them does not amount to anything.

I feel bad for him as well. I pointed this out a few years back and compared it to schoolyard bullying and I was told to fuck off from pouet :(
mental illness or not, what does it matter? if somebody poops on your doorstep every day for 7 years in a row will you also say it's OK because he can't help it? even though there's a free public toilet right around the corner?

Haven't always seen eye2eye with you havoc but holy shit that analogy!
/thread winrar
FWIW, I enjoyed Bits demos a lot more than most stuff that's out there. Making a weird demo for pretty much every compo hardly compares to pooping on your doorstep - unlike trolling/shitposting here (hello Ringo!).

This is an analogy I've used often as well, but to be absolutely transparent and fair, the actual problem was never the prod quality, it was the usual pattern about a lot of these cases - adding prods with broken info, spamming the oneliner, spamming threads, and so on.
Now that we're at it... has anyone ever seen BITS and talked to him in real life? Does anyone have a more personal insight? Does anyone really know what's going on?
I'm glad this thread has brought an answer (at least partially) to the .ru ZX Spectrum mystery. BITS is another mystery that has intrigued me for a long time. Would like to buy him a beer and hear it out for one.

@havoc: To tell the truth, I have no real opinion on whether he should have been banned or not. It was probably a right call, even if it means that a mentally ill person has one less channel to express himself. Getting bashed here was probably even worse in the long run anyway.
Regardless, just as I said, I can't be angry at people like that. In my mind it would be as counterproductive as telling depressed people to 'just get over it'.

Trilkk: No, no and no. And we're clearly not the only ones who had trouble communicating with him.

Well that does sound serious.
My problem with BITS was that he was also selling his demoscene releases for real money. Apart from completely contradicting what the demoscene is about, his releases were also of such a low quality, that it kind of felt as an insult for those who really spend a lot of time in making great prods.

Did he become rich?
BTW in 90ie it was rather common here to sell demos or cracktros (with the cracked game itself) -- at the time when ZX Spectrum was mainstream here or just began to become the machine for select few.
While we are at it... just ditch the downvotes. Problem solved.

That seems like a silly thing to get worked up about. The reason I don't sell my demos is nothing to do with me signing up to any anti-capitalist code of honour - it's that I have enough awareness of the real world to know that they have no commercial value and it would be a waste of effort to try (and as a hobby I'm cool with that). So what if BITS doesn't have that awareness? Having a webpage up with a bunch of Paypal links no-one ever clicks on doesn't hurt anyone (and if people do click on them, I guess that makes us the stupid ones).
I actually bought one of his releases. No joke.
@Gargaj: which one? :D was it worth the money?
I paid a total of $3 for BITS4023-WXP-20110218, which I received in email BASE64 encoded because otherwise mail servers kept rejecting the attachment. A download link was also helpfully provided.
I bought a BITS prod too at some point!
To be fair he also put them up for free download so it kinda is a "pay if you want" basis and yes, I doubt he got rich with it :p

@Gargaj, mail servers rejecting anything BITS is actually a good thing.

Fair enough but if memory serves you right you will remember that there's a lot more to the story of SolO2/BITS/Herman Samso than just the prods themselves. A consistent and often daily pattern of broken uploads, nasty code forcing hard resets, selfvoting, bot-like spammy oneliners, prod comments and bbs posts, a complete lack of response to any communication positive or negative, tomfoolery with prod submissions to parties, and so on and so forth. We dealt with it for the better part of a decade before throwing the towel in the ring, and even you pointed out that it was not outside the realm of the thinkable to

Ban him if he causes that much trouble or breaks the rules of this or some other site, don't watch his productions or thumb them down if you don't like them, don't show his productions at parties if you don't think they are appropriate. Install the attention whore script and disable his user ID. All of this is fine.
That's pretty much what happened since, outside of some in retrospect perhaps not so well deliberated schemes, born out of frustration, that did not actually materialize. On the upside, again almost a decade later, BITS prods are still made, released, uploaded and accepted by this site and by various demoparties and online compos. And over time they're even getting significantly better average thumb ratings, FWIW. All is well that ends well, to a degree, I suppose...
This was a great thread.
... it still is! keep it coming! demoscene entertainmente

What about people thumbing down prods only based on the fact they are made with a commercial engine? :D
