What do you think about this? Writing a modern operating system entirely in Assembler - to me, this sounds really crazy.
Is this guy, Ville Turjanmaa, related to the demoscene? (I've not found a hint pointing to demoscene relations of his yet.)

There's nothing mystical about writing stuff in assembly language, and MenuetOS is far from being able to be called modern. As a hobby project, it's pretty awesome though and obviously a lot of work has gone into it.
The recent Slashdot post about Minuet also triggered me to have a look. The most prominent question of "Why would you torture one's self like that?" is missing from their FAQ.

He certainly knows about it's existence :) But no, he is not a scener.

We also have BareMetal OS that last time I checked booted and spat you out at a DOS-like prompt in textmode with all your CPU cores available. It has since gained VESA support but not much else just yet.
