do you try to do art in your demos?

category: general [glöplog]
or do you just try to show what the system you work with is able to?

define art....
added on the 2003-09-12 13:10:28 by Pegasus Pegasus
Personally, I go for the fourth option: a demo which is not 'arty' and doesn't show what the system can do either :) (ok, so I haven't made a demo yet. But when I do, it will probably be a 4th option 'fun' prod, or it will go somewhere towards the 'art' direction.

Pegasus: art is something that you feel (unless you are thinking of the 'drawing a pretty picture' type of art), trying to define it is as pointless as trying to define soul, god, and other such things. It's different for each person, and if you do get a definition it will be either argued about forever, or so vague that it's worthless anyway.

pegasus: "the use of imagination to express ideas or feelings, paritcularly in painting, drawin, sculpture or demos =)"

hope thats enough

I am going to make a demo that express the idea to use socks to filter juice so it tastes different.

yea this must be what ppl call "modern ignorant art"

Running a demo on a gameboy, while it's inserted in a cow would class as that kind of art too, and it would get more media attention than pegasus's idea. And that kind of publicity can be used to make money, proving that you can make a living from demos. And of course, making a living from demos would be the real artistic statement of the whole excercise, and the gameboy in the cow would just be "modern ignorant art".

i am going to make a gb demo about filtering juice through socks, then I will insert it into Psonice's ass. THAT would for sure alteast get your attention.
added on the 2003-09-12 14:01:02 by Pegasus Pegasus
yeah, but is it art?

That's porn not art. You need a cow for it to be art. Perhaps if I dressed as a cow?
added on the 2003-09-12 14:08:59 by psonice psonice
ok. so the final product is:
psonice dressed out as a cow, with a gb stuck up his rectum, where the gb is running a demonstration about making juice taste different because it has been filtered through socks?

yes this is definetely art because you express your fetish that you like to insert gbs into someones ass.

The latest issue of finnish computer magazine MikroBitti ponders the same subject with the article "Demoista taidetta", written by Jukka O. Kauppinen (grendel/byterapers). All you finns might wanna check it out. There's some more in the nettijatkot too, only in finnish though.

Spending more time discussing art than making it is probably a bad thing. Look what happens to people spending more time watching porn than having sex.

well i just want ppl to answer the original question of this thread, you dont need to get philosophical.

The question being unbelivably pointless, no wonder nobody answered.

i just wondered what i would tell someone who asked what the demoscene is about.
would i say "those ppl just want to show what you can do with hardware" ?
sometimes ppl who see me watching demos, ask if it is some new screesaver ... so are demos just screensavers done for fast hardware? or are they more than that?

Scene is pretty varied nowadays. it can be all the things you mentioned, and much more. It can be art, it can be a technical demonstration of new rendering technique, it can be a scroller and a chip tune...

If i had to give a definition of scene nowadays, it would be something like: 'People making non-interactive realtime graphics and sound software to run on some kind of computer to entertain themselves and others'. Beyond that anything you say will make 50% of sceners agree, 50% angry, and start a flame war.

Perhaps just tell them it's a form of entertainment, like films are (could be art film, could be special-effects blockbuster, could be home movie or even a porno).

yes i knew about those 50% of angry ppl and thats why i first didnt want to start this thread :)
thank you very much for your answer!

yes, sometimes.
depends on what you mean by art.
nowadays, art might be defined by that newmedia-type like stuff, so well, that might fit to almost every pc-demogroup. i mean, who's not going with the timefactor, especially since doing/releasing demos turned out into a harsh competition these days. =)

In terms of painting graphics, it's very rare I inject any kind of artistic significance. I take quite a traditional demoscene view towards graphics and the focus of my pictures usually rests on the actual technique used and its superficial qualities.

If I want or need to convey something I prefer to do it in writing. I don't like art that is vague or open to interpretation as it can easily be misinterpreted. So if my point is important, I want it to be clear to everybody.

In terms of cows cut in half or coloured squares on white canvass, it can mean anything you want it to, but to me that shows a real lack of purpose on the part of the artist. Anybody can force conclusions from anything, we don't need to pay or praise someone for getting us to think our own thoughts.

Sure, anything can be called art, but like with anything else, there's good art and poor art. Sadly there are too many pretentious people who can't differentiate between the two, who claim to love everything labelled as art because it makes them look deeper and wiser than anybody else (see the story of the Emperor's New Clothes).
