poll: dx10 or good old 9 ?
category: general [glöplog]
Seeing that Kusma keeps dropping comments (hinting very strongly) that his next fuckings-demo will be on vista and using dx10, makes me wonder about the plans for the rest of you guys.
Consider this an official (albeit Pouet-like) poll then: Hands up all you coders who will be rendering to volume slices this Easter!

... and we're currently using dx9. I personally lack the motivation to move up to dx10, so a good kick in the rear would be helpful .. or not.
i'll stick to 9 if only for the broader target audience - i'm still not using 10% of dx9 anyway
I wouldn't mind moving to DX10 but I am still too happy with my current XP installation :) Also there seem to be like 5 people on the world using Vista, so...
9 for now.
Same here. 10 will be an option as soon as the adoption rate is high enough to actually give a fuck.
I'd say 10, but that's a personal choice :)
i'd say 9 for now, maybe 10 if win7 takes off a bit more than vista has.
Depends really on if you're interested in the technology or pleasing the scene though, I guess vista is more like another minority platform.. if you don't mind that, and you want to use the new features, go for it.

Hyde: Are you spying on my devmaster-posts or something? :)
I got a Mac so I wouldn't have to deal with Vista, and it's now my main platform. As a PC, I got a working XP installation and I'm not considering upgrading it (at least to Vista, perhaps I'll try Win7 if it proves out not to suck all too much).
But, feel free of course. There's always the video versions and geometry shaders are cool :)

OpenGL! =)
dx9 until i get motivation to port existing stuff to dx10. (probably never).
OS X and OpenGL
Kusma: hehe, in fact no -- but I think you mentioned geometry shaders once or twice on pouet already :)
the thing is: people generally seems happy to watch videos, so to be honest I am mainly concerned about the competition really. It's not cool when your effects look like they came from 2007 when everyone else is doing cool hyper-space stuff from the 5th dimension.

Considering Windows 7 and DX11 are not that far away, I will stick to DX9 this year and switch to DX11 when it's out.
Hyde: Ah, I replied to a D10-topic on devmaster 30 minutes or so before you posted this. That's why I felt a little paranoid ;)
It seems at times like half of the scene has moved to osx, but still writes demos for windows believing that's the only way to get an audience, so we end up being stuck with the videos ;)
OpenGL too :) since i'm too lazy to switch to dx.
kusma: Didn't you notice when Hyde installed that trojan on your laptop at KG? That guy uses every dirty trick in the book to get ahead!
And well, geometry shaders under good old windows xp. <3
OpenGL for dx10'ish effects on XP :)
gloom: Aha, that's how he managed to get my binary hack of stargazer that contained all those improvements!
Kusma : YEAH SURE :D
... trust all your inside secrets with Gloom the Swiss Cheese.
Speaking of hyperthings from the 5th dimension: Are there even any good examples of things that have been made using DX10 that simply won't be doable in DX9? And by that I mean actual visual improvements, and "not doable" != "DX9 would be 30% slower because of CPU generated geometry" :)
