Since I've been lurking this place for two years, I finally decided to join... I'm going to be working on setting up a coding forum (imapixel.com) for discussing effects, math, and any kinds of questions on optimization etc. I know a lot of people are super secretive about their code, but personally, when I started coding graphical stuff like this, I was completely lost... So if you're interested, roll on over. Suggestions are welcome (in before "Delete the forum" :)

@stefan: much respect for the community here, I just never saw/found a unified source for tutorials guides, or a coding hang out. I'm just trying to help anyone that wants to get the ball rolling. PS: Life sucks in southeastern united states where we have no parties. Europe has it good ^_^

imapixel could be pretty cool, there's already a coders forum at scene.org though. Maybe there are some others.

@yesso: I'm hoping to get a number of novice-level guides in order and on the site. At the moment I'm only getting started on a very-basics assembly optimization primer. In time, I hope I can create a community for coders that have a love for effects and optimization.

First: I can't wait for your coding forum to be on-line.

Well then you should hold a party yourself. You won't get thousands like BreakPoint or Assembly, but I think you'd be surprised at just how many will turn up.

@anakirob: It is sort of kind of up already, just need more people. If you know anyone that is into size/speed optimization, go ahead and send them to the site. I'll try to get an email out to entire undergraduate CS department here at my university, which should turn up a few interested heads (which brings up an entirely different rant: I hate how most of the CS kids here at my school just want the degree and have no interest in coding or anything actually related to computers. I do not like being lumped with these people that are not enthusiastic about their major.).

I think the only thing that would really stop me from having a party here is... I've never been to one. I'm kind of afraid that I'll hold this thing and come off with an entirely wrong message about the scene. I'm pretty sure that I could pull it together, but I'd like to convey the feeling I get about all of this digital art to all of the other people that would show up and not mess it up in the proccess.

Had you truly been interested in learning, rather that just pushing your own board, I would have suggested going to www.dbfinteractive.com which, whilst not being for experienced scene folks, is a great learning resource for newcomers and has a very active community. So if your idea is to join in, I would go there. If your idea is to learn, I would go there. If your idea is something else, good luck.

What coding forums are you people using (except those two :) ).
I hung around for some time on devmaster.net, there's a lot of information, but it's not very scene-centered...

isn't pouet 2 (uhuh) supposed to harbor a subforum for such technical matters ?

I'd love to have such a place here. Even having the BBS structured more like a forum with categories would help. Yeah, I know it wouldn't be the BBS anymore then...

rarefluid: the current BBS could stay unchanged (and it should imho to remain read by as many sceners as possible), it would just get a sister board that focus on techniques.

Would be nice. But who'd be willing to spend lots of time and effort on this? Besides that most code could be based on the BBS system for quick results...
I'm no PHP or mySQL wiz, as my crappy page shows, so I probably can't help much...

Gloom: as I'm already supporting one demo coding forum as much as I am able, I don't have time to support two or three or however many. My point was, however bitchily expressed (you should have my Monday before judging), that such a forum exists, its active and given the sparsity of openly shared coding knowledge, it seems best to me to piggyback on it, not compete.

IMO things works the other way round: first collect the people & contents, and then put up the forum.
Moreover, adding a new (empty) source of information doesn't solve the problem of having a too much of them, but rather make it worse.

Anyway, more than a forum I would like to see a repository of articles/tutorials that centralizes everything (diskmag articles, local sites like scene-it or escena.org, personal pages, etc etc)... That would be nice.

Then, a forum to discuss the articles or make questions is just an add on for me (you learn "reading" more than "asking" imho).
