The XNA Creators' Club licence yaddayadda

There's been some bitching about the cost of the Creators' Club licence ($99 per year) following the release of XNA demos for XBOX 360.
My two cents on the subject is: Windows isn't free either, now is it? If there was a pirated version of the XNA launcher, would you still be bitching about it?
And since the 360 is already hacked, i don't see why someone wouldn't be able to make a hax0red version of the launcher anyways...

Afaik, the xna license isn't shipped with the console like windows is with computer and once it's paid one time the shit is over.

That'll work for a couple of consoles and be patched with the next ones shipped or something.
Tell now that you have a foot in the lion's den and they somehow thrust you, what about convincing them to release some sort of light version just for demos (that is for programs that aren't supposed to generate any kind of money ;)) ?

Newer consoles are patched (or not ?), same old.
Besides, I'm pretty sure no one will release an xna 360 production without a windows version as well.
My two cents - dont whine about Microsoft charging people to watch demos, moan to the demo makers for not making Windows versions. Also, don't whine about Microsoft "commercialising the scene" by bribing sceners with free XBox 360s. There's still such a thing as free will you know...
They make their money off game sales, not the hardware. They probably realised people will try hacking it all over (smart) and decided to generate some money off the homebrew developers. Why don't they open up their hardware properly so that people can do whatever they want with it... I don't get it...

The real problem is not the license but the hardware these demos are running on. IMHO a person should be able to run homebrew software on a machine he buys without having to hack the thing or without having to buy an expensive license to be allowed to do so. So please keep running demos on hacked consoles or simply avoid the consoles at all and don't cooperate with this crap.

Well, you should be prolly talking to M$'s favourite group, Conspiracy ;)
But it'd be wise for Microsoft to free up the XNA launcer for viewing / gaming purposes, and charge the developers only. I don't think anyone would buy the licence just to play the games or view demos.
Anyways, my point is: Computers aren't free. Windows isn't free. There will always be corporations making money some way or another, coming from demomakers' (and viewers') pockets. Why start crying now?
How about when MS decides to no longer support the X0, and therefore no longer sell XNA Creators' Club licenses? Then you won't be able to watch the demos even with money...

But that doesn't mean that you didn't pay for it. M$ gets money from every Windows that's sold with a computer.

XNA license is apparently cheaper than the yearly gfxcard update you need to watch windoze demos properly... not following either trend, i don't see a problem on either side of the scale :)

I'll be ok to pay more for the full deal (devkit + launcher or whatever is required to run my code on my possible machine) but not every year.
The difference is that the hardware and the os offer added value (also outside the scene) while this license offers nothing (except for the permission to be able to do something which you already should be allowed to do in the first place)
Rainmaker: money is one thing, freedom is another. You can't possibly pretend that you're really in control of your own hardware when you need a subscription license to use it, but most people are capable of holding that illusion with EULA-ridden propertyware.

Me too, actually. And to be honest, I woudn't pay for the licence myself, at least yet. If people would be able to watch/play the stuff for free, I might consider buying a "developer licence" if there was such a thing.
