RIP Christopher Tolkien (son of J.R.R Tolkien - Hobbit & Lord of the Rings
category: offtopic [glöplog]
Maybe some of you were not yet aware of this news.
Christopher Tolkien has passed away at the age of 95. During pretty much all of his adult life he curated the famous works from his father and also released new books too that were by his father (although edited by him) - titles such as Children of Hurin is one that comes to mind right now.
We all know what kind of an influence he and his father had on the world of fantasy fiction; with the creation of Middle Earth and, in the last couple of decades, the movies as directed by Peter Jackson - these went to show just how unique a fantasy the books are.
Christopher Tolkien had a good life - now he needs to rest in peace.
Cheers !
Thoughts are more than welcome here :)

Thanks for editing and publishing Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, unfortunately i only have those from Christopher Tolkien...
let's hope he didnt die from reading Amazon's screenplay for the LOTR prequel they're working on
Everybody dies.
There are/were MANY other GEMS in this planet history which got burnt, destroyed, torn appart we will unfortunately never see nor read...

“Pippin: I didn't think it would end this way.
Gandalf: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.
Pippin: What? Gandalf? See what?
Gandalf: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
Pippin: Well, that isn't so bad.
Gandalf: No. No, it isn't.”

The real question is, does a celebrity actually die if Felice doesn't post a tenuous thread about it on Pouet?
Per ruairi, to quote a line performed by another celebrity that has long since passed towards a “a far green country” in another incredibly influential work

Ohhh, what's really going to bake your noodle later on is...
I have previously not been too impressed by C. Tolkien's curating although compiling Silmarillion must have been quite a task. But now I read that he drew many (all?) of the famous maps in Lord of the Rings, thus starting the trend that all fantasy books must have a map of the world. This does indeed impress me. Cheers, Christopher!
afaik, that trend started before LOTR, e.g. the Oz books a few decades earlier or all those fake travel novels like Gullivers travels or Robinson Crusoe that were popular in the 1700s
R.I.P
Maali: Aha, I see. I haven't read enough fantasy it seems :)
me neither, but I just remembered maps in the examples I gave and they're significantly older publications. would be an excellent subject for a PhD thesis in English literature though to map the history of fantasy maps along with some extra analysis how they evolved. e.g. those V-shaped mountains might be typically Tolkien, dunno :D
I now recall why I didn’t do a PhD.
(Not clever enough)
(Not clever enough)
or not patient enough. i assume after some research into cartography and cartography in literature, you have to fetch every bloody fantasy novel one by one from libraries across the country to verify whether they have a map inside, because very likely that isn't yet thoroughly labeled. it would bore me to death! :D
