25 years of demos on the web?

category: general [glöplog]

It was exactly 25 years ago today that I stood up PC Demos Explained, which I've kept on the web all this time despite being just about useless past 1997. While I think PC Demos Explained was the first website (back then we called them "home pages") about the demoscene on the web, I put a question mark in the title of this post because, if there were earlier pages, I'd love to know about them.

PC Demos Explained was of course not the first demoscene presence on the internet; that honor goes to the Hornet Archive which existed in its first form two years earlier in September 1992 on an FTP site, and eventually a website in 1995, and closing down in 1998 as 1. we were tired, and 2. the scene.org folks were stepping up in massive fashion and of course remain demoscene infrastructure gods to this day, for which we were and are eternally grateful.

If I'm wrong about any of this, I welcome corrections -- again, hence the question mark in the title of this post. But if I'm right, then happy anniversary, I guess? :-)

congrats on this jubilee!

however, i am pretty sure that razor 1911 demo section already had a group homepage in 1996, same most likely goes for fairlight.

@dipswitch yeah, but PC Demos Explained was made in 1994 (you know, 25 years ago)

do a zgrep -i "www." on the hornet archive and see what info files pop up first ;)
@britelite aaaah, sorry, having been reading too quick - thought we're talking about 1997

I can't help but imagine "back then we called them home pages" being said by Grandpa Simpson.

Anyway, one of the first things I did when I got net access in my freshman year at college was to hit the Hornet FTP site and grab the new ASM94 releases. Also subscribed to DemoNews (also 25 years old?). Admittedly I didn't visit PCDE often, since I pretty much knew what demos were about by then.
