prods for philips/radiola vg5000

category: general [glöplog]

where can we find prods for philips/radiola vg5000? or is there people interested on getting the most out from this machine, or making something for it? i’m really curious about...
I think it's safe to say that if a computer doesn't have an English Wikipedia article, it's under enough the radar to have no prods for it.

And the old-computers.com article seems a bit off as well. Claims it was the first home computer released by Philips, despite the P2000 predating it by at least 4 years (1980 vs "end of 1984").

You should ask Tom et Jerry from GPA, most likely the one and only VG5000 scener around! And his releases so far are mostly games.

I've touched one of these. It had a horrible keyboard and was super niche.

The keyboard (and video controller, and other parts of the hardware) are spare parts from the Minitel terminals built at the same factory.
From another article, the Video Chip is the same as in the Alice.

Yes, the Thomson EF9345 video controller is used in the Minitel (for which it was designed), VG5000, and Alice 32 and 90 (not the original Alice which uses an MC6847 video controller).

The best show for capacities of this video chip is probably on the most unlikely of the 3 platforms: http://hxc2001.free.fr/minitel/
If only the Minitel was more like a computer. It's quite powerful.

That's more or less what the VG5000µ is: Minitel hardware turned into a computer.
Except that both use a completely different CPU architectures....I just did read up on the 8052....It's relative slowness also is because of the slow external ram access....
