Varis is short for 'variables' and 'varieties'. That's exactly what
Varis is; a bunch of simple effects combined in different ways. Rather
than the wholesale copying of well known effects, what we did was to
take those effects apart, speed up and combine them with other effects.
Believe it or not, the only components used were simple 3d stuff, a
polar wormhole, fire and some line drawing routines.
Note: During The Scene 96, system settings left behind by the previous
demo caused Varis to run much faster than expected. So those guys
who's seen it during The Scene, don't be suprised if this version
of Varis seem much slower.
Btw, Varis needs a Pentium-90 or better. It's jerky even on a P-75. :(

Comments on The Scene 96

This year's compo definately has a unique placing in the demo world scene.
Although The Scene is relatively small-scale compared to major compos like
Assembly, The Gathering, it scores a few firsts (if I'm not mistaken). Its
the first asian demo compo (it was supposed to be, but those groups that
were invited didn't come ). The Scene 96 also boasts two very unique demo
entries :-
Devotion by WaterLogic : A scripted (not coded!) demo running in a vesa 2.0
640 x 480 x True Color mode!
Vortex by Genma 1/4 : A text mode demo! (Try running this on a projector,
it looks real solid!)
Currently, Vortex is already available in ftp.cdrom.com whilst Devotion
is scheduled to come out pretty soon.
