---Background---

This started as a bit of a joke around the office (yes, sceners grow up and 
have to lead "normal" lives) about doing st00pid things with old technology,
like, "Oh yeah?  Well, I can calculate fractals on an abacus!" or "Oh yeah?
Well, I can surf the web on my Game Boy!"  Stupid shit like that.  And one
person said, "Oh yeah?  Well, I can display video on my XT!".  And later
that day I kept thinking about it and came up with a way to do it.

Months later of tinkering on a Model 5150 (4.77MHz 8088 with CGA), I had
something working, and casually mentioning the project to gODjR/iq2000
sparked his interest and he began work on a MUCH vastly improved transcoder
for video to our system.  A few days before Pilgrimage 2004, he delivered it,
and I encoded the sample video I had prepared into raw data, RAR`d it up and
transferred it to the 5150, and then packed the whole thing up (monitor and
all) and took it on the plane with me.  Once there, I ran into massive hard
drive corruption problems and lost half the video data and 75% of the audio
data -- but, even with a broken production, we won 1st place ;-)

This final version differs from the party version in the following ways:

- Full 30fps instead of the reduced fps demonstrated at Pilgrimage
- Vastly improved buffering system for less pauses on slow disks/controllers
- NON-corrupted video and audio data :-)

---Running The Production---

This was specifically engineered to run on an original IBM Model 5150, which
is the legacy of the modern Wintel platform.  As such, all it requires (of
*any* PC, really) is a 10MB hard drive, a Sound Blaster Pro or 2.0, and a CGA
card and monitor.  I could have taken advantage of better hardware, but would
that be as impressive?  Of course not.  So, this thing should run on any
IBM PC or clone/compatible in existence.  (The only exception is an IBM PCjr,
because it was extremely rare you could hook up a hard drive to one, and also
because the PCjr lacked proper DMA so I/O could effectively lock the machine.)
In fact, you will probably have a harder time finding a Sound Blaster 2.0
or Pro and getting it to work in an 8088 than you will finding a machine that
won't run this production!

8088 Corruption was demonstrated on a real 5150 (a clone should work fine)
running MS-DOS 6.22 with BUFFERS=20 in config.sys and... that's it.  No disk
cache or anything else.  (In fact, an 8088 is so slow that a disk cache
actually *slowed down* sequential reads!  Seriously!  So don't load one.)
The BLASTER environment variable must be set properly or else the program 
won't work at all since the sound hardware drives the entire playback 
system (this sounds dumb but actually solves a shitload of problems, 
so don't knock it unless you understand it).

Tips on getting it running (well) on an old 8088/8086:

- Run on a real CGA card.  SIMCGA and other "CGA emulation" programs for
  Hercules cards will not work.
- Defragment the hard drive, preferably with a decent program like FastTrax.
- Use a DECENT MFM controller like one from Western Digital.  They are much
  faster than typical MFM controllers, and may be able to transfer data in
  two revolutions of the platter, or even one.  Hard drive speed is the
  ONLY reason this production will rebuffer from time to time, so get a 
  decent controller!  (Or you can "cheat" and put in an 8-bit ISA IDE
  controller.)
- If you own Spinrite or Norton Utilities' Calibrate, run them on the drive
  before you run this production.  Not only will they find bad spots on the
  drive if any exist (preventing you from blaming me for crashes), but they
  will also optionally change the interleaving factor of sectors on the disk
  so that your controller will be able to work optimally.  Do this *after*
  you upgrade controllers.  (BTW, the last version of Spinrite to work on
  8088 machines is 5.0.)
- Set your Sound Blaster hardware (and BLASTER environment variable) properly.
  An 8088/8086 uses different IRQ and DMA for things; for example, IRQ 5
  is typically the hard drive IRQ so don't just leave things at defaults.
  For the demo machine (and the machine I'm currently typing this on), I 
  have a Sound Blaster Pro working perfectly at DMA 1, IRQ 2, port 220h.
  Run the Creative Labs diag/sample programs to verify the sound card is
  working before you run this production.
- Only a Sound Blaster 2.0 or Pro will work.  Older cards like the 1.0 and
  1.5 don't support auto-init DMA, and later cards like the Sound Blaster 16
  and AWE32 require a 16-bit ISA bus slot.
- The more free RAM, the less this will rebuffer if the hard drive can't
  keep up.  DOS 3.3 with a CONFIG.SYS of only BUFFERS=20 and an AUTOEXEC.BAT
  with only a BLASTER= line will probably give you the most RAM free on a 
  640K machine.  Rebuffering is bad, m'kay?

Tips on getting it running on a modern machine:

- On my Windows XP SP2 1.8GHz Athlon with Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, it somehow
  works perfectly -- I guess the latest Turtle Beach Santa Cruz drivers make
  an attempt at emulating a Sound Blaster.  Surprised the hell out of me!
- On DOSBOX (dosbox.sourceforge.net), it runs just fine although DOSBOX's
  emulation of certain CGA modes isn't perfect; getting all 16 colors may not
  work (they may "blink") and the height of the image may be distorted.
  Try the latest CVS build of DOSBOX, and optionally answering both "yes" 
  and "no" to the "real CGA?" question you're asked on startup.  Also try
  forcing "mode=" to "cga" in the dosbox.conf file.

I haven't tried anything else... YMMV.

---How It Works---

Since gODjR and I want to flesh out the system to handle all sorts of stuff
(see below), no in-depth details this time, sorry.  But here's a few things 
to chew on for the coders out there:

- The entire system was engineered starting with the hardware limits of an
  8088 machine and CGA, and working backward (as opposed to traditional
  methods where you start with the 24-bit color image and work forwards)
- The only way to get more than 4 colors out of CGA without using composite 
  color mode is in text mode.
- 80x25 text mode produces "snow" if you write directly to screen memory, so 
  you can't use that.
- Sound Blaster 2.0 and Pro (and higher) support auto-init DMA.

That should be enough to get the gist of it.  Really, it's not rocket science.
In fact, the playback system is ludicrously simple -- it's the TRANSCODER
that is very complex ;-)

---Future Plans---

As previously mentioned, gODjR and I have several ideas on turning this 
"technology" from a trick into a full-fledged system that produces even better
results.  Some of the things planned:

- More than 16 colors out of CGA (we have several schemes working)
- Compression (both audio and video)
- CGA hardware tweaking for finer control of transcoded results

Once we're happy with this, full source code will be released along with tools
that will let you make your own video with this thing.  Until then...
