XiA, tIn and GGN
invite you to experience a warm
Christmas tale, right here, in the
comfort of your Atari ST. An ensemble
we like to call:
"Self running demo with
some logic circuitry"
"And what are the hardware requirements
of this production?" we hear you ask.
Well, we only require an Atari ST/STE/
MegaST/MegaSTE with 1Mb of RAM.
...oh, and a Roland MT-32.
We can already sense the polarisation;
some will cheer "Yay! At last a new
production to put my ageing old hardware
to use!". Others will scream out of
their lungs: "What? Extra hardware? Why
sir, I do expect my stock machine to
be able to run *any* production. This
is clearly an outrage!"
But, hear us out! Please remember that
the Atari ST has been a favorite machine
for musicians to create music using the
MIDI protocol for quite some time now.
Isn't it high time this joy was extended
to demos as well? Besides, with the rise
of new and inexpensive hardware like the
mt32-pi
(https://github.com/dwhinham/mt32-pi),
is it not criminal to let this
opportunity go to waste? So please,
lower your pitchforks and torches and
join us in celebrating one of the
platform's great strengths!
(sadly there was no time to test or fix
any issues on the Atari TT and Falcon.
Do let us know how it goes!)
What about emulation? Well, there is
a software MT-32 emulator available
for all major OSes called "Munt". And
as it so happens, both STEem Engine
and Hatari can be configured to output
audio to that MIDI device, once
configured properly. However, accuracy
of playback has been hit and miss, so
for best results you are encouraged
to try this on real hardware, or check
out an official video capture, hopefully
available at the same time this
production is released to the wild.
Enough babbling, let us provide you
with detailed credits:
XiA: Composed the music, drew the
lovely text screens, came up
with the required poetry,
provided invaluable input
and guidance throughout the
production of this demonstration
tIn: Once again demonstrated technical
brilliance, effortlessly writing
the demo's code, and of course
contributing to the design (and
poetry)
GGN: To quote the late Andy Fletcher:
He just bummed around. (He didn't
exactly program the MIDI player,
as this was extracted mostly from
Bad Mood 3.07. He did however have
endless discussions with XiA about
life, timers, and everything. Maybe
some bits of poetry escaped his
mind into the keybaord)
(Before we totally forget: Is this the
first release that is packed using
Mr Ni!'s brand new n2 packer? Probably!
And we're so happy about it!)
With that out of the way, is there
anyone that we wish to greet? Certainly,
everyone should feel greeted. Including
you. And you. And especially you. And,
of course, you who are usually forgotten
to be greeted in other demos. You get
a special mention from the bottom of
our hearts.
