Juice by Psychic Link
═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ J U I C E v1.1 (the second act) Copyright (c)1995 Psychic Link Released 23 October 1995 ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── JUICE came 2nd at Assembly '95. ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── This file accompanies JUICE v1.1 by Psychic Link. Psychic Link accepts no responsibility whatsoever for any form of loss or damage that may occur directly or indirectly as a result of this demo existing. The user executes it at his/her own risk. However, if anything cool happens because of this demo, then it's definitely due to us... :-) ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ What is this so-called JUICE of which you speak? ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── JUICE is a Demo. It doesn't do anything other that what you see/hear when you run it. It is a finished product in itself. It is called a demo because it is a kind of demonstration of our skills at programming, and of the power of the your computer. Every year, hundreds of demo coders from around the world gather in Helsinki, Finland, at an event called The Assembly. There are various competitions, which anyone may enter, whereby the entries are shown on a big screen, and everyone present (about 3000 people) vote on which they consider to be the best in each category. JUICE came 2nd in the PC demo competition out of a total of 37 entries (I think). The graphics you see when you run JUICE are being calculated in real-time, they are not a pre-stored animation. Similarly, the music is being mixed in real-time, it is not just one long pre-recorded sample. Because of this "real-time" nature of the program, there is a limit to the effects we can acheive, and if you are used to watching computer-generated special effects in films, then you may not be so impressed by JUICE because it does not look as good in comparison. Only when you have tried to write real-time graphics code yourself do you begin to realise just what demos are all about. ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ Detailed Coding Credits: ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Statix: Utils: Polygon routines for all screens, Player/Tracker, PMode Screens: Intro, Credits, Ducks, Torus, Rasters, Vast, Juice Pillar S-Cubed: Utils: Object Designer (for the Terrain screen) Screens: All plasmas, Greets, Terrain, Tunnel, Mbrot Zoom ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Music written by Skywalker using DisorderTracker 2.0 - our own tracker with lots of nice features like overlapping any-size patterns, 32 channels etc... The alpha version has been released - look out for it. It's very different from normal trackers, so try it - you'll like it... (we hope) And of course, thanks to Tran for his PMODE interface. ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ Comments ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The party version of JUICE was finished in a real hurry at the party place, just before it was entered into the PC demo competition at ASM'95. It was adjusted to run properly on the big screen, and also suffered from several bugs. JUICE v1.1 is the version we would have released if we hadn't had the deadline of ASM'95, and so it has fewer bugs, better setup, better compatibility, better syncing and is just generally better. We're not very happy with the state of this demo - we've got several half- finished screens and there are some bits which aren't quite as polished as we would like, but lack of time, laziness and sleep deprivation stopped us from reaching true perfection. ;-) We hope that you enjoy this production all the same, and that we can finally make some impact on the scene we've been trying to get into for some time! (seen ACT1? Exactly...) ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ Hardware Requirements + Problem Solving ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The demo requires the following hardware to run: _ A VGA or compatible graphics system. _ A 386/486/Pentium processor _ 4MB RAM If you have problems getting the demo to run, then you could try taking the following steps: _ Remove all memory-resident software (e.g. Keyboard buffer extensions, Mouse drivers) from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and then reset the system (a cold boot). Note: If you are using an Soundblaster 16 then you will still need to load the SB16 drivers if you want music. _ Remove any EMM/QEMM type memory managers and HIMEM.SYS, and do a cold boot. (The demo does NOT require HIMEM.SYS to run) If you want to start juice from a batch file (i.e. with no interaction) just start it with any command line parameter. This will cause autodetection of your sound card from the environment settings (ULTRASND and BLASTER). If none of it works at all, then we are sorry, but there is nothing you can do - short of taking the program to a friend who has a faster computer or one with more memory... We have tested it on as many machines as possible, and have endeavoured to make it error-free and as hardware tolerant as possible, but this is difficult, as we do not have access to many PCs other than our own, and those owned by our friends. If the program does not run properly on your machine, there is little we can do about it. Please don't write to us just to complain, or to seek advice in the event of the program seeming faulty, as it will have no effect except to make us very depressed. ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ How to Contact us ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── If you want to contact Psychic Link, try one of the following methods: Internet: S-Cubed / PL sah32@cam.ac.uk (best in term-time) Statix / PL statix@sv.span.com (best in vacations) Fax: S-Cubed / PL +44-(0)181 767 6304 14k4 line Voice: Statix / PL +44-(0)181 876 3008 (weekends only) Skywalker / PL +44-(0)181 876 5877 Snail Mail: Statix / PL Skywalker / PL S-Cubed / PL 6 Dungarvan Avenue 15 Daylesford Avenue 96 Streathbourne Road Putney Putney Tooting Bec London SW15 5QU London SW15 5QR London SW17 8QY ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ The mega greets list ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── General greets: Micro / Spinning Kids - Thanks for feeding us. Alistair (I've still got your boxer shorts...) Adrian, Tom (thanks for letting me use your computer) - All the cool people who I once knew and haven't seen for ages, who could possibly see this demo in another life, like Alex MacNaghten or Viri/Hutan. - All the cool people who probably won't see the demo, like Christine (send me an e-mail if you can), Sam, Jenny & Kate, Adam, Georgina, Miles, Anne, Angela, Rachel, Helen, Alex, Emily... these demos are what I spend my life doing. So now you know. - Antigreets to all lame buttheads who play music too loudly at the party place. Skywalker greets: - Everyone, including Blind Man Mcgee, Maz / Maz&Naz Ltd., Scab (aka DJ Goldrush), Pleb, all my other friends and all musicians and coders on the PC scene. Greets also to Nico (what happened?). - Antigreets also to lamers playing Gabba 24hrs/day at Assembly 95 while others are trying to write decent music 3 metres away. Of course anyone playing The Prodigy or other cool music very loud is excused. ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Many thanks to our families, for putting up with us, providing food, hardware, plane fares, and helping with general (dis)organisation... :-) ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ Water buffalo ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Aha! You have found the secret part in our demo! Just scroll down to the bottom of the file and stare at the dot... after a little time you will begin to notice a totally new effect. We call it boredom mapping: . ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ PL 95 ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
