Some scenes look really nice, and the music is fine, but overall it left me a bit cold as it had that very strong ”notch showreel” vibe, and lacked any sort of cohesion or soul. Still definitely a piggie veering towards a weak thumb up.

Nice one! Contains a lot of high quality content and keeps the run fresh. Still, contains some lower quality scenes as well (like the one where is a man floating in the space) but overall a very positive experience.

This circumstance unfortunately destroys the magic a little for me.
Anyway, cool demo

The best of your notch demos so far and I like the "effects show" vibe to it, but the scene poetry goes so far in the cringe territory that it turned the whole thing into comedy.

Am I getting jaded when all I feel is "meh" when I see something saying "we make every cycle count" but if rendered at 4k@60 HDR at a quite respectable 10 mbits a second it'd
1. be smaller
2. actually be watchable at 60 fps on a much broader set of hardware?

My ultimate line in the sand for the size of a demo is when a high quality rendered version of it is actually smaller than the runtime. I respect the living hell out of Notch and the tech in it (and acknowledge that Unreal and its ilk have cutting edge tech in there too) but more and more it feels like using engines built to provide interactive experiences to create demos crosses this line and this makes me want to watch demos less.

Maybe we need a megademo category.

Notch filesize certainly is an issue - runtime contains tons of stuff not used in demo itself, and I am guessing Notch team that is very low priority on doing any optimizations on that front for exe.
Should we be in different category? Perhaps, but drawing the line will be very difficult. File size is one way of doing that sure.
What saddens me is that you feel these prods somehow ruins your day. Notch/cables/ue/etc lowers the bar for newcomers and gives us "artists without coders" some way of getting out there. For me 64k is creme de la creme. I _wish_ I had skills to be there. Meanwhile, happy to do what we do.

That was unexpected.

Camera movement felt off like it was supposed to sync to something which wasn't there, scenepoetry was embarassing and like unclex pointed out it felt like incoherent notch tech demo.

But I definitely wasn't bored, so there is thumbs up for that.

Some quite cool looking scenes, but too random. The scenepoetry was not my cup of etc.
added on the 2024-09-16 13:45:30 by break break
i think i get the concept of the demo, being like a typical boasting demo from the 90s but taken on overdrive with modern visual tech, and it almost lands it, some good effects and aesthetic choices help a lot, but it lost me with the cheesy trance music (have heard much better from turbo knight before) and extra cringy scene poetry (could easily have conveyed same message with a lot less cringe and bloat).

"Ruining my day" is overdramatizing it a bit :) I have no intention of belittling the work that goes into creating the content and I get that using these tools lowers the entry barrier (that's why they're created after all), but I did wonder what in this was 300+ megs while watching it.

We used to hold ourselves to a higher standard and were proud of it - that's what the text in this demo is about. Storing the music in an uncompressed wave file (~60 megs of this demo) is a pretty ironic indication of how far we've wandered from that standard.
added on the 2024-09-16 14:57:41 by BoyC BoyC
For me by far the best part is how the cringemeter manages to go up and up with every new text. Just when you think “OK this one was as trumpy cringe as humanly possible”, next text comes along and blows the previous one out of the water. I’m sure that’s not as easily achieved as someone might think.
added on the 2024-09-16 15:25:10 by 4gentE 4gentE
I have to admit that these guys know how to make stuff look good. Notch or not, there's still countless hours behind all this and I appreciate that. And everybody uses tools. Some tools just do a bit more than others.

But I have to think, if we should take some steps backwards? Arbitrary limits have been the thing in demoscene, and now the only limit is that it is realtime. Which of course requires some optimization efforts even with Notch. And now when I start to get philosophical with all this, is your tool actually limiting your creativity? Something like Notch is not a tool to make everything you can imagine. No tool or framework is.
Notch stuff looks good, especially in talented hands like shown here, but can you innovate? Of course you can! But perhaps it takes couple of more rounds to really materialise. At least if you are not part of Notch (or any other similar) dev-team.

what unclex said... also those 'bold statements' like 'we make every cycle count' yet using a 3rd party demotool and effects is hopefully meant sarcastic, otherwise it's stupid as fuck :)

Thank you so much for your positive feedback! It truly inspires me to keep working hard on new projects.

I sometimes wonder about the challenges that might lead some to give negative feedback or become easily upset. Perhaps we could all try to appreciate the creations others have crafted with great effort and even consider making our own.

If this demo didn't meet your expectations, I encourage you to create something that reflects your vision. If you desire something different, you likely have the skills to bring it to life. The future of the scene depends on all of us, so let's take responsibility and contribute positively. Let's focus on making more productions and fostering a supportive community on Pouët.

The Fast Forward demo was a love letter to the scene. The texts, music, and overall flow were carefully crafted and intentionally "cheesy." I've long dreamed of creating an old-school style Doomsday demo, and this fall I finally had the time to bring it to life. Apologies in advance to those who may not appreciate it—there's more to come.

I don't think this was overdone at all. Really. I don't. Can we have more prods like this, please?
rulez added on the 2024-09-17 17:07:24 by Nofew Nofew
A high effort mess, not into the style.
It's weird because i think some of the effects with different music could be a vibe, if they were sequenced nicely.
added on the 2024-09-17 18:22:30 by wrighter wrighter
This was like: "Contents: 200% Demo"
The texts were so over the top that it was clear to me that it was done with tongue in cheek. And everything else was so hyperbole that it was fun, especially at the party with the really nice speakers.

Others have commented on the file size and hardware requirements. I think that is the tradeoff you have to do when using a big professional tool like Notch that you cannot completely control.
Also comparing it to our little handrawn pastel coloured demo released in the same compo feels like they could not be much further apart, and I think that is a good thing. Demoscene is amazing in that everybody gets to do their own thing.

Great dynamics and nice feeling of megademo concept. I like effects and fps, but would love to see polished scenes with some common theme + that skill and features.

Looks and sounds really nice, but what is the point of participating in the demoscene if you're using a commercial engine?
added on the 2024-09-19 14:28:05 by sagacity sagacity
@sagacity: Commercial, but created by sceners. By the way, so for you it’s forbidden to use commercial software in demoscene-productions? Like Deluxe Paint or Photoshop?
added on the 2024-09-19 17:24:50 by gaspode gaspode
@gaspode, I'm not sure why that would make it any less commercial?

Also, DP and Photoshop are used in content creation and don't replace the actual effort. Generative AI tools would, though, and I don't like them either for demoscene purposes.

Anyway, no need to have an elaborate discussion here. I still think it's a cool looking effort, it just doesn't evoke the appropriate scene spirit for me. It's just, like, my opinion, man.

i usualy don't like notch made demos even if i admire since the beginning all the massives things that Smash/flt did in the past ;-)

but i loved that one
great atmosphere
great music
great energy
everything is well synched

definitively love it

I don't care if it's a Notch production. And think the visual quality is great, the music's got a damn good drive to it. At the same time, I wish it had substance beyond that. Instead, the on-screen texts at best read like standard markerting blurb. At worst, they read like unreflect infantile megalomania. Which does not even remotely represent me as a part of the "we" you decided to speak for.
added on the 2024-09-19 21:22:52 by rp rp
I miss this kind of vibe, the old days when people show new effects, multiple stuff, always expecting an amazing new effect or some really beautifull scene.
I know it's not a "we make every cycle count", and it's 300 mb, and I can't run it on my hardware... so only youtube. But..
I like it! And I like this kind of music :)
And... Doomsday will ways rule for me... :)

Mega demo, now with all that past history and Doomsday glory, I wish they’ve coded it themselves to prove all those silly statements presented inside. Otherwise it’s just Fairlight/CNCD demo with a 3rd party designer from long dead Doomsday :)

That is the problem and there's no straight solution for it. Mostly us ancient teams who are resurfacing (or never really been away) notice that only breed which are not inspired to come back, are the coders. Byterapers has a huge bunch of graphicians ja musicians, but those few coders who did something awesome stuff 10-20-30 years ago, are still missing in action, or just commeting "is that gonna stay that way" but not participating. Same goes with Doomsday, everyone is hiding except Wode. We have tried everything to encourage them to return to active duty but nope, it seems coders are just not inspired, they live a good life with their huge coders salary, buy houses, fast cars, yachts etc .. we common folk are forced to use 3rd party engines when possible just because of that, not because we wan't to use them, but we have to because we want to participate compos at parties, and not just lurk behind the corner or in the dark forest drinking piss warm beer.

If you have solution this how to kick life to this coder breed folk, please share the wisdom. Otherwise we keep using the tools we have (and be a bit better step by step)

Recruiting coders seems to be quite impossible task aswell, same goes with 3D guys. Musicians, graphicians, "designers" - no lack of of those though.

The flying astronaut scene, the infinite zoom, the tokamak, everything looks really good. So thumb up. That being said, it should have been clearly funny/ironic (in the scenes, in the narration, but even more in the music), but it was not obvious enough in this current version. Too bad, I liked the concept !

The visuals look great. And can I like techno. But... and I never thought I'd be the one to say this, but this is... hectic - and not hard. There are too many random switches between unrelated scenes at points the music does not call for. I wouldn't mind watching each scene for longer with more meaningful sync.
