Yeah so this is an experiment with Neural Cellular Automata (NCA) as a style transfer filter. The idea is to pack a very small neural network in a shader and run that iteratively to change the raymarched picture to match some target style. In this case there are two in a sequence and the image is upscaled 2x with a bilinear filter inbetween to enlarge the "receptive field" of the latter filter.

It wasn't a complete success because the effect had to be really subtle to work at all but I think it just crossed the threshold from the "filtered rendering" to the "amateurish painting" side. I learned a lot when working on this :)

I used and studied these two Alexander Mordvintsev's ShaderToy examples: 1, 2, the respective Jupyter notebook, and their paper that explains what's going on.

I'm planning to write a bit more about this and release all my code later.

Oh and the zip includes an animated version of the piece that shows you the intermediate cellular automaton steps in their full latent space glory :)

interesting idea and just looks nice

The filter really makes a difference. unique looks. Would be cool to see this concept developed further.

I really like the concept and I'm impressed by how much effort went into this entry. It's a shame the audience wasn't aware of all this magic during the compo, I'm sure the entry would have scored higher otherwise (maybe a more descriptive info slide would have helped)

Either way, I haven't seen a 4k exe gfx pull off the "liminal space" aesthetic quite as well as this one, very nice

The picture itself didn't really work for me, but thumbs up for the cool idea.

what noby said (!)
i wonder on what range of motives this can effectively work

The style looks hell looking good, and the tech, I love this kind of exploration.
Looking forward to the write-up!

I didn't understand at all what happened here when you explained it on the IRC channel, but the comments here and the infofile make it much clearer. The fullres image is also more or less required to be able to appreciate the effect.

I also tried to look at the _progressive.exe, but it refuses to run on my work computer and crashes with a TDR OpenGL driver error.

as said, this particular image certainly did no justify the amount of effort that went to it, but the example images in the repo look far more promising to me :) maybe it's the combination of yellow(ish) and brown here that looks a bit ugly to me. nevertheless, as always, I tend to downplay the accomplishments of AI until they are so awesome that I cannot simply downplay them anymore... so, exploring this path could eventually lead to great results

I actually like the "ugly" colors and simple geometry; adds to the "classical oil painting" vibe, and it was quite apparent that it's more than just a noisy filter in the compo :)

I'm a cce fanboy because of these experimental explorations.

Kudos for the research and the effort of fitting it all in 4K - I see there tremendous potential.

Keeping fingers crossed for future experiments, keep it up!
