I was unable to test the demo on that particular combination. However, I tested it on few other (slightly newer) ATI and NVIDIA macbooks and it worked. I guess your hardware is too old.
I also added a texture unit -test to the demo (online version), but dunno if it really tells the truth. You should probably check if this works on your computer: http://alteredqualia.com/tmp/webgl-multitexturing-test/
