Really, really nice issue :) It's really a pity the current editor won't be continuing it, let's see who is willing to take the editor's work :|
Excellent.
\X/ BECANNE
cool mag & issue!
hard work! thanks for that contribution humphrey!
better if you try to download from here:
www.scene.org
www.scene.org
great mag indeed. i really hope to see more of them in future.
Nice as usual :)
Superb!
WARNING! CONTAINS IMAGERY OF DRUNK TEKNO! NOT SUITED FOR YOUNGER AUDIENCE WITHOUT DONSI!
yeah!!
Aiiiiiiiiiiii
Gargaj: In fact, i have photos of all you drunked ... but well, i think that with the cover of the number 02 and this photo is enough... XD
High quality as usual, now in english for the masses.
It's great that there is finally a demoscene magazine released on a somewhat regular basis that looks like a "real" magazine. The fancy layout and the life-like photos of sceners create an atmosphere much closer to reality than traditional scene media do.
Rocks.
humphrey: now you just be careful with threats, ok? ;)
r0x!
Gargaj: erhmm.... well, touché! XD
yeah! now we still need your support!
yay \o/
not as good as the previous ones but still worth reading.
Nice issue, maybe not as good as the previous ones and a bit short, but still very good and entertaining. Kudos for the translation work which I know probably has been hard to do, spanish people writing english articles is something that doesn't happen too often :)
Hope to see more people contributing in the next issue, the mag is really worth it.

!!
Oh! Oh!!! Great!
Another wonderful issue of the best demoscene magazine ever!
But it's a little short this time...

Excellent. Just 1 point of criticism: have someone capable go through the articles and correct faulty English.
Finally, an english version of Becanne. Oh, gotta love that awesome design! I should print that mag..
Niels: Thanks for your criticism. I consider a lot all opinions. I hope that if appears someone who wants to edit the magz, the translation will be better. Thanks again.
printing in colors, just awesome, nevermind the english
Excellent.
"srg ciego" in the cover... ¬_¬
Pretty decent layout and design, but quite shallow content.
And maybe PDFs should get their own category, since they don't have much to do with diskmags.

Brilliant.

Shut up, conservative fool. It's a magazine, it can be stored on several kinds of disks: it's a diskmag. The only difference is that it's content is accessible on a multitude of platforms using standardized software instead of buggy often full-screen untested bullshit that next to keeping me from doing other things in the meanwhile often also starts cranking out totally lame music while presenting me with side-content I'm not looking for while using too much system resources.
So here's to you: get fucked.
it's still no diskmag, but then for example pain isn't a diskmag either because nor it comes on a disk image, neither it fits on a disk. but well, here we are with manifestation of difference between semantical and ethymological meaning of words.
What about scenemag ?
like férdinand de saussure wrote in his "general course of linguistics", the language is always an image of a certain yesterday. it adopts to reality slower as other semiotic systems, and here we have a perfect example of it in a quickly-developing subculture. so it's perfectly natural that we call digital scene-publications "diskmag", just as musicdisks are no "disks" anymore.
Becanne in english... the evolution leaps forward :)

*cough* Acrobat Reader *cough*
Gargaj: generally, Adobe Reader doesn't take 100% CPU constantly (quite common with most scene-coded productions :-) )
Most "windowed" musicdisks tend to do that also, and that, sir, sucks plenty.

Nice one, looks great too

Sounds reasonable. My point was not the "disk" size anyway - whether it fits on a floppy or compact disc is a secondary issue -, but rather wanted to point out the difference of the media used. A somewhat coded interface as a shell for text/gfx/msx was always an integral part of what we usually call diskmags. Just like a bunch of ogg files won't be a musicdisk, independent of the "disk" size.
Jcl: I _always_ have problems with Acrobat Reader. Shit slow, hogs mem, stupid protection schemes, bleh. Diskmags were always comfortable for me...
latest reader is faster tho :)
absolutely seconding gargaj. plus, why the hell acrobat 6.0+ requires internet explorer?!
YEA. i want more. please somebody (wise)become the editor.
I just, just wanted to applaud this magazine and it's presentation/execution. It's modern, it's trendy, it looks good and with a little more content direction it'd be perfect.
Me too, Niels. I never had any problem with pdf's, becanne and even my old computers. I can read this from a PentiumII, PIV, whatever... it's the best presentation a mag could have.
yeh, nice mag i love the stylish and slick looks, content could be a tad more, but at least the content now is GOOD and enjoyable, something various other mags cant manage.
Thumbs up for next issue ;)
Thumbs up for next issue ;)
it's slick, cool and well written. a little strange that it needs 3rd party software to "run" though, but i guess it's the age of the internet, so..
cool.
Nice issue :)
Although, compared to the previous ones, I found it a tad short. I also liked the previous issues better, but that's just a personal opinion :)
I know they've put a lot of effort into translating the articles into english (or writing 'em directly in english), but Becanne definitely needs a proofreader.
As for it's format, i totally second niels' opinion.
All in all, an excellent job. I also hope to see more people involved and contributing to it's development :)

along with kriik#4 - the best executed scnemag issue. keep on working, guys.
pdf is an okay platform, but so much more interesting things can be done in other formats...

I have the fear, that if this was edited in a "conventional diskmag format", people would be comparing it with Pain or (yuck) Hugi.
Definitely one of the things that has made Becanne so popular in just 4 issues -apart from the content- is the "original" format for a diskmag,
After having printed this last issue on a brand new color laser printer... I think it rules SO much :-)

by 'other formats' I didn't mean the old and tired diskmag concept... I was thinking something more like rootmag (rootmagazine.org)...
the way a scenemag should be done :)
nice articles, nice design, etc.
pdf format is just perfect for a mag.

damn.. i read this on schools mac. it rules. i wish i had it as papermag :D
rules!!!! i just love the concept, the execution, everything. and though i agree this needs a proofreader, it's already a lot better than spanish! :)
Short but good
_
Humphrey had this idea of "paper-like" mag since... 8 years maybe? So it was a good idea after all XD
nice mag.
a bit few content, and could use better proofreading, but all in all this is very very nice!
2 more things...
1. just get the thing printed on a good laser printer, original size is great but some postprocessing for A4 size rocks for easier reading while at... the bus of course :)
2. as for reading on screen, it run perfect on mac and linux with no speeddown... just don't use adobe acrocrap :)

Back in time we already had trashcan diskmagazine with mega-sized issues that took 1 year to prepare
very, very nice! Is really nobody going to help them??
looks like :(
Great!
Looks really nice, and the articles are good.
bump?
Becanne was a magazine distributed in PDF format. Edited by Humphrey of Centolos, its first three issues were in the Spanish language. The fourth and last issue was in English. All the issues can be downloaded from {scene.org}. They got about 200 downloads each so far.
Becanne #4
Becanne #4 was released in February 2005, about a year after the first issue. Like all issues, it spoils the reader with a professional looking layout - one to three columns per page, photos and other images included, various different background graphics. It's 40 pages in total, including the front and back covers. The contents include an interview with the coder Trace of xpslv, a Bcn Party 100 report, a tutorial about texture generation (it's already part 3, the previous parts were published in the Spanish language issues of Becanne), an article about German demo parties, and several one-page-long statements by individual sceners such as Crest, Spock, Sergeeo and ps.
It's a nice magazine all in all, and it makes the reader wonder what he has missed due to his lack of knowledge of the Spanish language.
As we can read in the Editorial, Humphrey didn't want to remain the editor of Becanne. He thought it would be better if a fresh spirit came to the magazine once in several issues. Too bad nobody wanted to become the new main editor of Becanne and so the magazine stopped issuing.
