Added this mainly in order to link to this video which shows a recording in DOSBox on macOS, where the sound is a little bit different from how it sounded during the compo. Honestly not sure why exactly this is the case, perhaps it was running on an actual MIDI device during the compo? In any case, the device apparently did not respond to the reverb MIDI commands which were supposed to turn it up to the max, and also a lot of note stealing was happening in some parts, making them sound thin or incoherent.
Please don't read this as a criticism of the orga team or anything! This is my first 256b, and I'm very happy I got to compete in the compo at all. I learnt a lot and had a lot of fun making it and also got a lot of super useful feedback from the fantastic people at the party (plus the feeling that it could probably be crunched a lot in size still ;-)

2ftx: The system midi synthesizer in MacOS sounds different from the one in Windows. In Windows, midi has no reverb. And some instruments sound different. And Dosbox does not have its own midi synth, it just uses the system midi synth.

P.S.: enjoyable soundscape ^_^

Actually maybe that's what compo organizers should do, pick a random, different MIDI synth for each party, so that sizecoders learn that MIDI != MIDI. ;)

Apart from that, nice visuals.

@saga, what a diabolic idea xD

I liked this one :) nice sound nonetheless and interesting patterns

Sadly, the windows MIDI dll does not implement reverb
Stereo panning works though and repeating notes with
Decreasing volume can sound reverb~ish (see Enchanted)

Yeah, or any GM-compatible hardware synth. Or even non-GM to be extra evil ;D

At some point I tried configuring General MIDI + DOSBox on Android OS — the result was a similar kind of chaotic mess.

It’s a good reminder of why so many demosceners in the ’90s dismissed MIDI as inferior and steered clear of it ;)
